An Assistant County Attorney (ACA) is a merit system position within the Office of the County Attorney. This position may be filled at the ACA II or AVA III level and will be assigned to the Finance and Procurement Division of the Office.

Assistant Count Attorney II is a grade 27, salary range $62,168 - $103,309.

The general duties of an Assistant County Attorney are: (1) providing legal advice to elected and appointed officials, and County departments, agencies, boards, and commissions; and (2) representing the County before state and federal courts and administrative agencies. Additional duties will include review and negotiation of procurement and real estate/development transactions, and handling litigation related to complex commercial matters.

Education : Graduation from an accredited university school of law.
Experience : ACA II -Two (2) years of experience as an attorney, including trial experience. ACA III - Thorough (4 years) experience as an attorney, including some specialized (1 year) experience involving either local government law or commercial transactions.
Equivalency: None.
Licensure : Membership in the Maryland State Bar; or, membership in the bar of any other state in the U.S. in which case Maryland State Bar membership must be obtained during the probationary period. Preferred Criteria

(1) experience communicating effectively orally and in writing;
(2) experience handling complex commercial transactions, which may include software licenses and technology, commercial and business law, contracts, construction, and real estate development projects;
(3) experience handling all stages of complex litigation in state and federal courts, including serving as sole counsel or first chair at trial; and
(4) an understanding of legal issues facing a local government.

All applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be reviewed and rated by subject matter experts based on the Preferred Criteria. Based on the results of Preferred Criteria evaluation, applicants will be rated and placed on the Eligible List as either "Qualified" or "Well Qualified." The highest rated applicants will be placed on the Eligible List and may be considered for interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are same grade or higher will be placed on Eligible List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for interview. Note: In the event there are 5 or less minimally qualified candidates, all will be placed on the Eligible List as Qualified and will be interviewed.
