POSITION : Assistant Dean, Division of Sciences and Mathematics

Professional Non-Unit position, 12-month a year position


Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, supervision and evaluation of the part-time faculty in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics. Oversee the academic areas within the Natural Sciences Department (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Sciences, and Biotechnology). Provide leadership for course and curriculum development in the Natural Sciences. Participate in and coordinates specific STEM-related activities.

  • Recruit, hire, orient, supervise and evaluate part-time faculty for all departments in the Division.
o Work with the Department Chairs and Program Coordinators in the Sciences and Mathematics to identify prospective part-time faculty to ensure consistency and quality of instruction in each area.

o Hire adjunct faculty to the college, division, informing them about department policies and procedures.

o Supervise and evaluate adjunct faculty in the division.

o Respond to/ resolve adjunct faculty and student issues appropriately and in a timely fashion.

o Review syllabi/course materials and observe the classroom instruction in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Work with faculty if improvement is needed.

o Implement and maintain all provisions of the collective bargaining agreement as they pertain to part-time faculty.

  • Oversee the academic areas within the Natural Sciences Department (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology).
o Provide leadership for course and curriculum development and assessment of student learning at the class, course, program, and general education levels.

o Cultivate opportunities to expand and refine offerings to meet transfer opportunities and respond to current workforce demands.

o Explore alternative delivery modes for science curricula.

o Responsible for maintaining and enforcing the college's chemical hygiene plan, lab safety policies, and chemical disposal practices.

o Supervise/oversee the laboratory areas, including usage, maintenance, related equipment, and supplies.

o Supervise/oversee the science laboratory technicians, and approve the use of work study students in the lab areas.

Will also:
  • Participate in /oversee College and statewide STEM-related activities as they pertain to recruitment, retention, and degree completion (i.e., activities for Early College, ABLE 4 STEM).
  • Attend college and statewide meetings that may impact and relate to divisional program areas.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of grants to support academic initiatives within the division.
  • Participate in ad hoc committees and attend internal/external meetings deemed necessary for divisional representation.
  • Participate in division meetings, faculty/staff meetings, and manager meetings, as well as other meetings required for non-unit administrators.
  • Participate in the scheduling of classes, preparation of the master schedule, and the assignment of faculty each semester.
  • Communicate updates, recommendations, and concerns to the Dean of Sciences and Math. Advise the Dean on matters as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of Sciences and Math.
1. Master’s Degree in a Natural Sciences discipline - Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology required.

2. A minimum of 5 years of related experience in academic administration, at least 3 years of supervisory experience.

3. College level teaching experience in a Natural Sciences discipline required. Community college teaching experience strongly preferred.

4. Academic leadership experience required. Community college leadership experience preferred.

5. Strong computer skills required.

6. Knowledge of current trends in STEM–related activities preferred.

7. Experience in developing and assessing student-learning outcomes preferred.

8. Knowledge of current use of technology, student-oriented software, distance learning and multimedia formats as they relate to student teaching and learning preferred.

9. Knowledge of creative and innovative instructional techniques to facilitate the student learning process preferred.

10. Effective oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills required.

11. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body required.

12. Commitment to the mission of the community college, to teaching excellence, and to the

maintenance and continuous improvement of high standards for student learning required.

Additional Information:
REPORTS TO : Dean, Division of Sciences and Mathematics

SALARY : Anticipated salary is $75,000- $85,000 per year plus fringe benefits. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
