The Housing Division at MSU, comprised of Residence Life and Family & Graduate Housing, offers a unique, on-campus living experience for students and their families as they focus on their academic success. Residence Life exists as an integral part of the educational program and academic support services of the institution. The departmental mission includes provision of reasonably priced living environments which are clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable, and include safety features; ensures the orderly and effective administration of the program through efficient management; and provides a learning environment and related co-curricular programs which promote maturity and academic success. Programs and services are directed toward the development of individuals' awareness within a community and their responsibilities to themselves and those around them. These programs and staff interventions are designed to promote maturity and are grounded in human and student developmental theories.
The Assistant Director of Residence Life, a member of the Housing Division’s Leadership Team, assists the Chief Housing Officer and Associate Director of Residence Life in the management and program development of a 3,300+ student residence life program at the University. In coordination with the Leadership Team the Assistant Director supervises the administrative procedures of eight Resident Directors; supervises, evaluates, and coordinates the tasks of the Residence Life Central Office administrative staff and all administrative functions associated with the Office; coordinates the contract release/exemption process; creates, maintains, and updates all departmental marketing pieces (including web content); coordinates the housing application process; directs the department’s MSU Friday’s efforts; and provides leadership and direction to all personnel in the Housing System as needed in the CHO and Associate Director’s absence.
Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Education, Business, or a related field.
Progressively responsible experience in a residential housing system that includes program administration and planning.
Successful experience applying and interpreting policies and procedures.
Experience hiring, supervising, and evaluating the work of others.
Experience writing, creating and producing marketing materials and business correspondence.
At least three years of experience as a Resident Director in a residential housing system.
Evidence of collaboration with other campus constituencies and departments.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of a university residential housing operation and management; competent at creating academically focused residence hall communities; solid experience with educational programming models; proficient computer expertise with a variety of software packages; effective speaking and presentation skills in front of groups of varying size, solid understanding of effective marketing techniques; extensive experience in facilitating change, managing conflict, and problem solving; effective interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate employees to perform at and sustain a high level of quality; sensitive to the needs of residents and have an extensive knowledge of customer service; ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and / or technology; expertise in exercising good judgment and making consistent decisions; welf-motivated, takes initiative and works independently; logical and creative thought process to develop solutions according to written specifications and / or oral instruction; ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks; ability to make on the spot decisions based on knowledge of state and university policies, procedures, department goals and objectives; an understanding of federal and state laws pertaining to housing; strong and effective communication skills; conduct and research special projects and formulate reports as needed; excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task while meeting hard deadlines; and capacity to work effectively and efficiently under extreme deadline pressure.

Ability to work long hours, consecutive days, and holidays as needed.
Ability to be in an on-call status and react to emergency situations as needed.
Occasionally lift packages and boxes of marketing materials up to 30lbs.
Able to sit for long periods of time working at a computer.
Occasional travel for professional development.
