University Advancement is seeking an Assistant Director of Annual Giving & Memberships who will have responsibility leading the implementation of annual direct mail and online fundraising campaigns to increase both the number of donors and the amount of dollars raised for Western Washington University. The Assistant Director will manage the Alumni Association Membership renewal process and work closely with Alumni staff to drive and implement strategies resulting in increased memberships. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with Advancement colleagues, deans, department chairs, faculty and staff and reports to the Director of Annual Giving. This position is a full time, 12-month administrative FLSA exempt with an excellent benefit package, including over 4 weeks of vacation. This position is available immediately.

About the Department: University Advancement includes the Alumni Association, Western Washington University Foundation and Special Events and exists to support Western Washington University by building enduring relationships with its constituents and raising funds from private resources. University Advancement staff members provide broad-based programming to create life-long relationships and raise, process, manage and steward annual and major gifts from alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff, corporations and foundations. Both the Alumni Association and the Foundation are 501(c)(3) organizations with volunteer boards. University Advancement strives to further Western’s identity as an institution that welcomes and embraces diversity and encourages applications from diverse candidates.

Position Responsibilities: Along with the Director of Annual Giving, develop and implement a comprehensive direct mail and online annual solicitation strategy targeting key alumni segments, as well as parents, faculty/staff and leadership donors. Assist with writing content and developing creative concepts for annual giving appeals including video appeals and social media blitz campaigns; mange setup and printing for smaller, in-house mailings and work with vendors to manage outside projects. Organize and implement comprehensive affinity and departmental fundraising campaigns, working with campus colleagues to develop content and solicit appropriate constituencies. Manage all aspects of the Alumni Association Membership gifts program including direct mail, online and telephone appeals. Assist the Director of Annual Giving with the management and execution of stewardship initiatives. Develop effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed. She/he will be comfortable working with a diverse group of constituents and the level of ambiguity that comes from a changing environment.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years professional experience in development or related field
  • Proficiency using the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal, written and interpersonal
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate others
  • Demonstrated ability organizing, managing and prioritizing multiple projects and programs simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education or non-profit sector
  • Expertise using Microsoft Excel
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Knowledge of and comfort using various forms of social media including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of fundraising, annual giving operations and industry trends
