The University of St. Thomas, School of Law, invites applications for the Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development. The Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development is a key part of the Office of Career and Professional Development, providing data collection and reporting oversight, direct student counseling, educational programming and outreach to employers in support of the broader CPD vision established by the Director and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. The position is a part of a very fast-paced office, requiring the ability to balance multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining a positive, welcoming attitude towards students and colleagues. The position requires an extremely high level of attention to detail and deadlines, particularly when dealing with data reporting. Additionally, the position requires the ability to counsel students and alumni on all aspects of their career and professional development.
1. Counsel (in-person and via email) law students and alumni regarding career options, professional discernment, networking, job search strategies, resume/cover letter preparation, and interview skills.
2. Primary responsibility for NALP, ABA, US News and World Report, and all other data collection and reporting, including observing all collection deadlines and all outreach to new graduates from previous academic year.
3. Develop, implement, and publicize career-related presentations, workshops, and programs. This may also include presenting at the program personally, or it may include scheduling speakers on a particular topic, including presentations by the Director.
4. Develop, edit, and update CPD educational and informational materials and resources, including web-based materials, hand-outs, etc.
6. Serve as the primary contact for the post-graduate judicial clerkship application process.
- Primary responsibility for all CPD internal publications and newsletters (including regular newsletters for students, alumni, and other specific groups
- Event coordination (OCI Application Process and Reception, other CPD-sponsored events, etc.)
- Making students aware of all application processes (i.e. clerkships, fellowships, summer associate opportunities, diversity opportunities, etc.)
- Manage work study process.
7. Assist in CPD marketing efforts to enhance the reputation of the School of Law and increase the recruitment of UST Law students, complimentary to the marketing efforts of the Director and the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
8. Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: BA required; Advanced Degree (J.D. or masters) strongly preferred. At least three years' experience working in a legal environment (i.e. legal practice, law school, or other employer working directly with the legal community) required. Preference for work experience with government or public interest legal employer. Career counseling or other student service experience strongly preferred. Equivalent experience may be substituted for advanced degree.
- True passion for supporting and counseling law students and alumni.
- Strong attention to detail, especially with respect to data accuracy and program/application implementation, publicity, and deadlines.
- Understanding of legal hiring and market trends, including private practice, public interest, government, and alternative/non-traditional opportunities.
- Excellent grammar, writing and editing skills sufficient to effectively proof application materials and draft correspondence and resource materials.
- Excellent presentation and verbal skills sufficient to effectively articulate concepts in counseling sessions, presentations/programs, and meetings.
- Ability to make independent decisions and exercise mature judgment, analysis, and discretion, as well as strong organizational skills.
- Ability to interact positively with a diverse group of students, alumni, faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills in previous work environments.
- Ability to weigh and balance multiple goals and responsibilities with frequent interruptions.
