The Assistant Horsemen's Bookkeeper acts as an intermediary between NYRA and the horsemen (owners, jockeys, and trainers). Provides customer services, handling all financial activities for authorized horsemen who own personal accounts at NYRA. Manages credit of winnings and debit of fees and expenses to and from accounts Authorizes check cashing for horsemen with NYRA accounts.

Responsibilities:
  • Opens accounts for horsemen doing business at NYRA
  • Posts deposits and withdrawals to/from horsemen's accounts
  • Verifies owners, trainers, and jockeys of horses which place in races insuring the right people get paid
  • Processes daily purses
  • Processes horse claims (purchasing of horses through NYRA accounts). Arranging, debiting and crediting from buyer to seller accounts
  • Executes end of day reconciliation
  • Reconciles accounts weekly processing the deduction of fees
  • Collects NY Jockey Injury Fund and Worker's Compensation Insurance fees
  • Mails account statements monthly
  • Processes Jockey and trainer payroll on behalf of owners once a week
  • Facilitates check cashing for authorized horsemen
  • Submits required forms to IRS
  • Bills trainers for number of stalls used
  • Posts Stake accounts charging owners' accounts nomination fees.
  • Runs various reports regularly
  • Ad hoc projects as assigned by the Racing Secretary

Qualifications:
  • Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's preferred
  • 3 to 5 years of administrative, bookkeeping, payroll or accounting experience
  • Strong computer skills with an emphasis on word and excel
  • Ability to work with mathematical formulas and percentages
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work in different locations (Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga)
  • Ability to work a weekend and holiday schedule
  • Knowledge of horse racing a plus
