POTTER COLLEGE OF ARTS & LETTERSDepartment of Modern LanguagesAssistant Professor, SpanishPOSITION: The Department of Modern Languages at Western Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment as Assistant Professor of Spanish with an emphasis on language pedagogy, beginning in August 2013. QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate in Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Education, Spanish or related field required. Eligibility to work in the US required. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish.

Ability to teach Spanish at all levels. Evidence of excellent teaching ability, effective uses of technology, and commitment to proficiency-oriented instruction aligned with ACTFL standards. Training and experience in teacher preparation / pedagogy for foreign languages. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The ideal candidate is a dynamic teacher who engages students in learning both in and outside the classroom, and who contributes to the academic and extracurricular life of the language program.

The individual hired will teach courses in second language acquisition and teaching methods, as well as introductory literature or culture courses in support of the Spanish major. Responsibilities will include coordinating first and second-year Spanish program articulation, as well as supervision of student teachers in the field. S/he should be committed to working with teachers in the region and supporting the expansion of dual credit offerings. The individual hired is expected to be active in scholarship, professional organizations, and university service.DEPARTMENT: The Department of Modern Languages offers majors and minors in French, German and Spanish; Arabic and Chinese major/minor programs are in development.

There are Japanese and Russian courses through the intermediate level, and first year courses in Swahili. Faculty members may earn additional income through a variety of teaching opportunities during winter and summer terms. The university provides excellent support for professional development. New faculty members receive mentoring.
