The University of Alabama School Social Work invites applications for two tenure track faculty positions. Appointments will be made at the assistant professor level effective August 2013. We seek talented and innovative scholars who are actively engaged in research and will bring depth to the teaching of courses in social work and social welfare.
As a community of knowledge-builders, we are looking for productive and creative colleagues who, through their scholarship and teaching, bring new perspectives to the synthesis of practice, policy, theory and research. Applicants should have interest and expertise in reaching our diverse student body through online education. We are strongly invested in recruiting colleagues who, in their practice and research, demonstrate experience with, knowledge of, and sensitivity to the needs of culturally diverse and underrepresented populations.
Minimum qualifications for both positions are the MSW degree and completion of a doctoral degree in social work, social welfare, or a closely related field. Candidates must have good, beginning records of published research in refereed professional journals. Demonstrated competence in teaching, advising, and providing field liaison to social work students is strongly preferred.
Position one is intended for a faculty member competent to teach BSW and MSW students in a range of social work foundation courses, both in online and face-to-face classes. Area of specialization is open but should be consistent with the current needs of the School.
Position two is for a faculty member with strong research and teaching interests in gerontology and end-of-life issues. For this position, interest in and the ability to contribute substantially to interprofessional education efforts and to interdisciplinary research on eliminating health disparities is strongly preferred.
The University of Alabama has an enrollment of more than 33,000 students on a residential campus located in Tuscaloosa, a metropolitan area with a population of approximately of 150,000 people. The community offers good neighborhood schools, low crime rates, and excellent recreational opportunities. Birmingham, Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, and the Great Smoky Mountains are all within easy driving distance.
The School of Social Work offers the BSW , MSW , and PhD degrees, and the School’s faculty have the opportunity to teach in all three programs. Faculty have excellent support for research and teaching, including state of the art computing equipment, multi-media classrooms, workload credit for research, a School of Social Work Office for Scholarly Affairs and opportunities to work with nationally prominent research colleagues. The School enjoys good relationships with federal, state, and local social service, health, and educational agencies. The School also has a well-established teaching program in Washington, DC.
