This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position that will be 30% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station), available in the Agronomy Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL). This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Duties will include the development of field and laboratory research leading to the release of improved forage cultivars. Of particular interest is the improvement of tropical and temperate forages with reduced input requirements and enhanced environmental adaptation such as drought resistance, winter hardiness, pest resistance, nutrient use efficiency, and increased spring/fall forage production. Collaboration on germplasm enhancement and cultivar development is expected with interdisciplinary scientists working in the areas of plant breeding, biotechnology, pest management, soil and fertility management, stress physiology, and livestock production. Tenure will accrue in the Agronomy Department (http://agronomy.ifas.ufl.edu). The faculty member will participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education through classroom instruction, chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate research, and publishing the results with his/her students. The faculty member will seek contract and grant funding to support his/her program. . The selected faculty member will be expected to integrate into the UF/ IFAS Plant Breeders Workgroup and the UF/ IFAS Genetics Institute. It is expected that the incumbent will develop and release cultivars of commodities for which research is being conducted. The faculty member will engage in Extension activities in his or her program area.
Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.
An earned doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in forage breeding, plant genetics, or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.
