The College of Engineering at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites mechanical engineering candidates for a full-time (academic year) tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank. Special consideration may be given to exceptional candidates at the rank of associate or full professor. Selection of rank will be commensurate with candidate’s qualifications and experience. The position offers an outstanding opportunity to build an engineering program for the 21st century guided by the University of Georgia’s Strategic Plan specifically identifying UGA engineering as a priority initiative for the University http://oap.uga.edu/uploads/sp/UGA_Strategic_Plan_2020_October_30_2012.pdf . The position will be available August 15, 2014.
Responsibilities: Successful candidates will be charged to integrate discoveries from multiple fields in their teaching, research, and outreach programs. In pursuit of this integration, candidates are required to establish a research program of national and international prominence, develop courses and pedagogical approaches to educate UGA engineers in a liberal arts environment, and partner with faculty in other disciplines and with industry to build a vibrant collaborative environment that significantly and continuously extends the boundaries of current knowledge. Candidate’s research will be expected to simultaneously focus on technological innovations and advances in basic knowledge while fostering a multi-disciplinary systems perspective which includes, in particular, the broader benefits to society. Candidates have latitude to submit a research area(s) that provide innovation technology in all areas of mechanical engineering, however candidates with a strong teaching and research background in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply: solid mechanics, mechanical vibrations, micro and nano systems, industrial process design, and manufacturing. Candidates shall compete successfully for extramural funding to support research and a companion graduate and postdoctoral training program. Candidates must show evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
About the College of Engineering: Described as a college without boundaries, UGA’s College of Engineering, formed on July 1, 2012, reflects a new paradigm for interdisciplinary engineering education that fosters engineering education in a liberal arts environment and research in areas inspired to solve real-world problems. While engineering is a UGA tradition dating back to the 1850’s, in the modern era, the rapidly expanding UGA engineering program focuses on opportunities for learning, research and outreach at the confluence of disciplines. The College faculty are not partitioned into departments. This open structure provides an unrestricted environment for collaborations within and outside of typical engineering disciplines. The College offers eight undergraduate and seven graduate engineering degree programs in all engineering fields. Additional information is available at http://www.engr.uga.edu/ The first state-chartered university in the country, this land grant and sea grant research university is located in Athens, GA, about 60 miles from Atlanta, with 35,000 students, enrolled in 17 schools and colleges, and 1800 faculty. For many reasons, Athens is consistently voted among the best municipalities in America. http://www.forbes.com/places/ga/athens/ ; http://www.athensclarkecounty.com/ .
Application Procedure: To apply, candidates should combine into a single PDF document (1) letter of application, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) unofficial transcripts, and (4) statements of research and teaching plans. This file should then be submitted online at https://facultysearch.engineering.uga.edu/ME2013 . Candidates should also arrange to have at least four letters of recommendation submitted in PDF format to the same web site.
