Assistant Professor in Community Health Education. Full-time tenure-track position beginning September 15, 2014.

About the Department: The PEHR Department, within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, has a full-time faculty of 14, and offers five degree programs including a B.S. in Community Health, B.A.E. in Physical Education and Health, B.S. in Kinesiology, B.A. in Recreation, and a M.S. degree in Human Movement and Performance. The PEHR Department and Community Health Program support Western’s mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in an inclusive, student-centered university that develops the potential of learners and the well-being of communities, and encourage applications from diverse candidates.

Community Health Program: The Community Health Program is a nationally approved program, receiving this status in 2011 from the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE) and the American Association of Health Education (AAHE) [SABPAC]. The major is a competency-based curriculum with a combination of content courses and theory/process/experiential courses which are based on the skills needed to meet the requirements of entry-level health educators. It prepares graduates to become Certified Health Education Specialists through NCHEC, Inc. To learn more about the Community Health program, visit

Position Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate courses including Society and Sex, Introduction to Public Health, Program Planning and Implementation in Health Education, Health Communication and Social Marketing, and Health Education Grades K-8. Teaching responsibilities may include other courses to meet the changing competencies of health educators. Advise community health students. Conduct research and disseminate findings through professional channels. Provide service to the program, department, university, community, and profession.

Required Qualifications:
  • An earned Doctorate in Health Education, Community Health, Public Health, or closely related field by date of appointment
  • Demonstrated evidence of effective teaching
  • Evidence of scholarly contribution to the field or potential for scholarly contribution
  • Evidence of service to community/profession

Preferred Qualifications:
  • CHES or MCHES certification
  • Commitment to campus-community partnerships
  • Experience working effectively with a diverse student body and faculty
  • Successful university-level teaching
  • Student advising experience
  • Internship supervision experience
  • School and community health experience
