ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
Position: Applications are solicited for an assistant professor of mathematics education with a focus on PreK-8 mathematics to begin in August 2013. The position is a tenure-track, academic year appointment with the possibility of summer employment.
Qualifications: A doctorate in mathematics education or related field is required (and must be earned by the start date). Graduate-level study in mathematics and school mathematics teaching experience are expected. Familiarity with US schools, either through instruction or research contexts, is desirable. An active record of scholarship and productivity commensurate with experience is required. Candidates should have strong potential for attracting external funding.
Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities for research (50% of workload) include conducting an active research program in mathematics education, publishing scholarly work, and seeking external funding. Primary responsibilities for teaching (50% of workload, implemented as 2 courses per semester) include courses in undergraduate mathematics education programs for PreK-8 teachers; courses in graduate mathematics teacher education programs; courses in the mathematics education doctoral program; and advisement of undergraduate and graduate students. Service to the institution and profession is also expected.

Local context : The University of Georgia Department of Mathematics and Science Education consists of 13 full-time mathematics educators and 9 full-time science educators with research interests spanning learning, curriculum, teaching, teacher education, technology, and equity. In the mathematics education program we offer BSEd, MEd, MA, MAT, EdS, and PhD degrees and support over 25 mathematics education doctoral students with assistantships. We currently have multiple active NSF grants. We enjoy strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in the Mathematics Department, the Statistics Department, and area school districts. The College of Education consists of 9 departments and approximately 220 faculty members. The University of Georgia is a land- and sea-grant research-intensive university composed of 15 schools and colleges with approximately 35,000 students. Athens is a town of over 100,000 located 75 miles northeast of Atlanta.
