Position Description:
The assistant pulse crop breeder works in close concert with the pulse crop breeder to provide organization, support, and assistance needed to develop new pulse crop (dry pea, lentil, and chickpea) varieties and improved production practices for North Dakota and surrounding areas. The North Central Research Extension Center Director will provide supervision for this position.

This position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
• Assist in planning and executing field and greenhouse experiments to achieve the research goals of the overall pulse improvement program
• Make hybridizations under the direction of the project leader
• Prepare field books and collect data on agronomic trials
• Plant and maintain research plots
• Harvest, analyze, and generate reports

The assistant pulse crop breeder must be able to carry out these and other duties as assigned with general and minimal guidance from the pulse crop breeder and the NCREC Director. Also, it is expected that the assistant pulse crop breeder develop close collaborations with faculty and staff in the NDSU departments of Plant Sciences, Plant Pathology, and Entomology, and other North Central Research Extension Center personnel.

The North Central Research Extension Center is one of seven out-state NDSU research extension centers. The center is located one mile south of Minot, a city of 45,000 in north central North Dakota. Minot is an All-American City with excellent health, educational, recreational, and community facilities and a modern international airport. Minimum Qualifications:
• M.S. in agronomy or closely related discipline
• Experience in a field crop breeding program
• Experience with emerging plant breeding technology and genetics in agricultural systems
• Ability to conduct applied and basic research in the field, laboratory, and greenhouse
• Computer skills (data analysis, word processing, data presentation)
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with clientele groups, colleagues, and scientists
• Ability to work in a team oriented environment

Preferred Qualifications:
• Academic or research experience in field plot design and/or related disciplines
• Experience in grant writing
• Ability to operate field, laboratory, and greenhouse equipment
