We are currently seeking a technically adept and safety-oriented individual with strong decision making abilities to fill the position of Assistant Signalman Apprentice

.

The

role

Assistant Signalmen Apprentices are paid apprentices learning the duties of a Signalman.

Critical performance areas include:
·

Learning and performing construction duties (including shovelling ditches);

·

Installing, repairing, maintaining, testing and inspecting signal systems including automatic block, traffic control, train stop, train control, cab signal and interlocking systems;

·

Learning and using additional equipment including rail-highway grade crossing protection, automatic classification yards, and other similar devices, appliances and systems.

The training

Successful candidates will complete a 1-year paid apprenticeship program which will train them to perform all of the duties of a Signalman. Candidates will attend two three-week courses at various technical schools in the U.S. The training will expose the Assistant Signalman to Ohm's law, FRA rules and regulations, how to test wayside signals, how to test a switch machine, highway rail crossings issues, DC track circuits, and stick circuits among other items of relevance to the position. Successful completion of each course is essential.

The ideal candidate profile

Ability to follow company safety procedures, use common sense and maintain an overall level of safety awareness

·

Capable of making effective decisions when in unfamiliar locations or when responding to changes, interruptions and obstructions in work processes

·

Demonstrate effective written, graphic and verbal communication skills

·

Ability to understand and apply electrical/electronic and mechanical principles

·

Capable of reading and understanding visual displays

·

Ability to judge the condition of objects/parts for wear and/or defects

The requirements

·

Successful completion of company pre-employment tests

·

Successful completion of operating rules exam before end of apprenticeship

·

Current and valid driver's license

·

Good eye-hand coordination and the ability to grasp and be able to work at heights and elevations

·

Good climbing and balancing skills for performing installation and maintenance activities

·

Ability to frequently lift/carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds

·

Distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses

·

Ability to distinguish colour with no more than four errors in a sixteen plate isochromatic test

·

Average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40 decibels or less at 500 HZ, 1000 HZ and 2000 HZ, aided or unaided

The assets

·

Preferred education is an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering or other electrical background

·

Commercial driver's license
