Job Description:General Summary:
----------------
Supervises activities of workers engaged in the
installation and repair of railroad track on specified
territory. Installs and repairs railroad track on
specified territory of railroad, using portable grinder,
spike puller, spike driver, and tie adz, to grind ends
of rails, removes old spikes, drives new spikes, cuts
ties to fit fishplates, and performs related
maintenance. This is accomplished by performing the
following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the
following. Other duties may be assigned, as requested or
required.
1. Supervises and works in conjunction with Director of
Track to schedule activities of workers engaged in the
installation and repair of railroad track on specified
territory.
2. Operates single- or multiple-head spike puller to
pull old spikes from tie.
3. Raises rail, using hydraulic jack, to facilitate
removal of old tie and installation of new tie.
4. Operates tie-adzing machine to cut portion of tie so
that tie plate can be inserted to hold rail.
5. Drills holes through rails, tie plates, and
fishplates for insertion of bolts and spike, using power
drill.
6. Operates single- or multiple-head spike driving
machine to drive spike into tie and secure rail.
7. Operates track-wrench machine to tighten or loosen
bolts at joints that hold ends of rails together.
8. Operates rail saw to cut rails to specified lengths.
9. Operates portable grinder to grind worn ends of
rails.
10. Sprays ties, fishplates, and joints with oil to
protect them from weather.
11. Paints railroad signs, such as speed limits and
gate-crossing warnings.
12. Drives company vehicles.
13. Performs other duties as requested or required.

Job Requirements:Education/Experience:
High school education or general education development
(GED); and 1 to 3 months job-related experience; or
equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates and Licenses:
Valid Drivers License.SPAN The employee in this job must be able to pass Railroad
Operating and Safety Rules Test.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of and skills in using hand tools, including
wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc.
Knowledge of and skills in using power tools and
hydraulic equipment, including portable grinders, rail
saws, tie-adzing machines, spike pullers, single- or
multiple head spike drivers, track wrench machines,
power drills.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out
detailed, but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to pass Railroad Operating and Safety Rules
Test.
Ability to talk and hear well enough to communicate with
co-workers, supervisors, yard workers, section leaders.
Ability to see well enough to read operating and
maintenance instructions, gauges and dials on precision
measuring tools.
Ability to read and comprehend safety manuals, operating
and maintenance instructions, test materials, drawings,
schematics, and procedure manuals.
Ability to apply concepts of basic shop math, calculate
figures and amounts such as area, circumference, length,
distance, and volume.
Ability to write legibly to complete routine reports,
and complete required testing.
Ability to acquire and maintain a valid drivers’ license
to operate company vehicles.

Must be able to see 100% of time.
Must be able to hear and talk well enough to communicate
with co-workers, supervisors, yard workers, section
leaders 80% of time.
Must be able to stand 100% of time.
Must be able to walk level or uneven ground 100% of
time.
Must be able to climb on and off equipment 5% of time
Must be able to bend, stoop and kneel 50% of time.
Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 150
pounds 50% of time.

Physical Dimensions:
The employee is required to exert up to 150 pounds of
force occasionally; and/or up to 125 pounds of force
frequently; and/or up to 100 pounds of force regularly.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while
performing the essential functions of this job.
The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather
conditions and elements, noise, and fumes from gas, oil,
and grease.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
The employee in this job has direct supervisory
responsibilities.
