Qualifications : We seek applicants who will provide a leadership role in our new Product Design Program. A master's or PhD in Industrial/Product Design, Art, Engineering or Architecture or other related field is required. Successful candidates will bring a sophisticated understanding of design aesthetics, a singular perspective on design research and processes of innovation, and 3+ years of experience in professional product design. We are particularly interested in candidates’ perspectives on the evolution of design pedagogy in the areas of contemporary design theory, including design research, strategy and entrepreneurship; and physical (ie: FDM) and virtual (ie: CAD) tools of development. Teaching experience as well as experience in professional practice, studio design or research is required. We seek applicants dedicated to professional growth and teaching, with the ability to work cooperatively with diverse students and faculty.

Position Description : Faculty in the Product Design Program teach undergraduate courses that integrate an understanding of product design theory and practice. The typical teaching load is five courses/studios per year (quarter system). Faculty are expected to have well-defined research or creative practice interests and to engage in sustained inquiry into emerging issues in their area of expertise through the pursuit of funded research, scholarly publication and/or recognized professional practice. Other responsibilities of program faculty include advising and supervising undergraduate students in the Product Design Program as well as undergraduate students in allied fields, and service on administrative committees. The Product Design Program is currently an undergraduate program, however, we expect to establish a graduate component within five years. The Product Design Program currently has 4 faculty members, 150 undergraduate majors, and is rapidly growing.

Product Design and Collaborators : The University of Oregon’s strong liberal arts tradition offers a rich and flexible curriculum that allows undergraduate students to select from many course offerings in business, anthropology, biology, chemistry, and environmental studies along with the major requirements. The interdisciplinary nature of product design studies and practice is reflected in the courses required for the product design majors. The Product Design Program, located within the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, offers a BA/BS in Material and Product Studies and a BFA in Product Design. The program, and this position, is based in Eugene, OR. The Product Design Program has additional offerings in Portland.

The Product Design Program provides a thorough grounding in the use, invention, and production of manufactured goods, and is constructed to be agile, shifting and growing to meet the rapid changes of the material world. Students will study both material and theoretical aspects of product design, including design history, material studies, manufacturing strategies, economic planning, innovation techniques and design research. On-the-ground internship experience in the Northwest design industry is a key element of the BFA degree. The Product Design Program merges the breadth of an outstanding liberal arts institution, including the humanities and social sciences, with the focused rigor of product design, interior architecture, art, business, and science curricula.
