Programming Director

RELATIONSHIP
The Programming Director reports directly to the Executive Director.
PURPOSE
The Programming Director is responsible for coordinating, implementing, and evaluating community programming to enhance resident’s experience, while developing and maintaining cultivating relationships with community organizations, current residents, and families. Working with the Programming staff, she/he understands resident interests and needs to create a varied yet innovative activity program, focused on the Six Dimensions of Wellness.

Community leadership teams are committed to following a leadership staffing model that includes weekends, routinely working either a Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday schedule.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Resident Care – Programming
Implements events and programming to enhance the assisted living experience and improve the resident quality of life
Evaluates programs to make sure the quality of programs fits the needs of all residents
Develops an innovative seven day a week activity program that is engaging and incorporates the Six Dimensions of Wellness;

Leads and implements one-on-one, small group and large group programming according to the programming schedule
Supports, encourages, and directs independent program pursuits, both individually and in small groups
Supports the resident’s abilities by understanding that all aspects of care can be viewed as an activity
Produces an online and printable quality monthly newsletter and calendar and daily activity calendar on a timely basis, through Benchmark Connections
Collaborates with Benchmark Connections Coordinator to manage and produce weekly Benchmark Connection training and presentations for all residence
Incorporates Benchmark Connections in programming for residence
Coordinates the programming with other services in the facility
Recruits volunteers to assist with daily or special event

Management/Organization
Supervises programming department staff, including, Programming Assistant, Programming Coordinator, Benchmark Connection Coordinators, and Van drivers in the community
Responsible for the training, mentoring and supervisions of Volunteers

Analysis/Reporting
Maintains basic information documentation of all volunteers, community organizations, and programming resources
Records and analyzes resident involvement and participation in programming
Complies with all QRS standards for activities and programming
Communication
Writes, edits, produces, and distributes a monthly newsletter to residents and families, that includes an upcoming calendar of events
Develops and distributes a fully itemized list of special events to all departments in a timely manner
Creates and maintains relationships with families and friends
Develops “networks" within the community at large to improve program creativity and public relations for programs held within the community as well as outside of the community
Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers when appropriate
Assess resident needs and develop resident programming goals

Computer Skills
Demonstrates proficiency in computer applications
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Basic knowledge of Benchmark Connections

Advocacy
Recognizes and assists in the prevention of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation (financial and other) and reports to appropriate sources per state regulations
Effectively communicates with residents, families, friends of residents, and staff
Effectively communicates with other care providers in a professional manner
Notifies ED of incidents in a timely manner
Provides information and support to families about transportation services, cable TV, telephone, guest meals, clothing tips, and gift-giving
Effectively handles follow-up issues with residents and families
Compliance/Safety
Adheres to all OSHA regulations and safety procedures when lifting, bending, and using equipment
Maintains a high level of confidentiality regarding residents, staff, and the community
Demonstrates infection prevention and control
Immediately reports any personal accident or work-related injury
Understands and effectively utilizes emergency response standards and practices

Customer Service
Responds to resident/family requests in a timely manner
Supports the resident’s family, friends, and significant others as ongoing caregivers and members of the Caregiving team
Meets customer service standards in a friendly, helpful, courteous manner with resident and family satisfaction a priority

Knowledge and Experience
Pursues educational development in senior living and aging
Demonstrates knowledge of Benchmark Standards and Practices
Demonstrates working knowledge of state regulations
Shows familiarity and experience using a wide variety of equipment related to the recreational Programming of elders and the disabled, including, but not limited to, craft supplies, VCR, stereo, stove, and food preparation equipment
Possesses knowledge about the assisted living philosophy
Understands resident care function in assisted living
Understands quality of care objectives
Understands quality of life objectives
Demonstrates knowledge of Benchmark Standards and Practices
Possesses knowledge of policies in the resident handbook Financial Management
Develops, implements, and follows departmental budget
Monitors and maintains monthly budget reports including monthly budget analysis of actual vs. budgeted expenditures and track accounts. Problem Solving/Decision Making Skills
Responds to emergencies and personal emergency response system and knows when to call for backup
Effectively handles difficult resident behaviors
Reacts calmly and effectively in emergency situations

Resident Care ¾ General
Demonstrates knowledge about residents in regard to background, participation needs, physical abilities, interests, cognitive capacity and attention span capability
Encourages and motivates residents to attend and participate in programming and activities
Stays with group at all times when on excursions
Marketing/Public Relations
Serves as member of the community Sales Team
Participates in monthly Sales Meeting and Internal Sales Team
Represents the company with pride and knowledge to educate outside groups and organizations
Actively participates in local community programming and in professional associations, representing the community in a manner than brings positive recognition, enhances marketing activity, and generates wider awareness of Benchmark
Strategy
Responds to residents’ preferences and incorporates preferences into program design, by utilizing the resident profile
Designs, develops, delivers, and communicates the goals of a comprehensive program, while incorporating the Six Dimensions of Wellness
Integrates residents preferences into program design, to increase residents engagement
Encourages participation in events and programming
Training and Education
Models validation techniques while assisting and caring for residents
Participates in trainings/in-services as required by Benchmark and state regulations Teamwork/Collaboration
Works as a team with all associates
Promotes a positive work environment that emphasizes teamwork
Demonstrates flexibility
Works collaboratively with all associates at the Community
Maintains relationships with other departments to coordinate programs Vision/Innovation
Conducts resident lifestyle programming interviews and incorporates information into the development of program Programming
Develops programs that maximize resident participation and motivates residents to take advantage of program offerings
Surveys new and existing residents to continually develop programs based on their interests
Creates new programming taking into account newest AL developments (pet therapy, intergenerational programming, etc.)

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE- CERTIFICATION
Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience and knowledge of aging and disability issues
Must be qualified by experience and training to develop programs appropriate for elders and disabled individuals

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical stamina and ability to assist residents or lift residents where needed and in emergency

HARBOR REQUIREMENTS - Pursues educational development in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders
Possesses training and knowledge of Alzheimer’s and related dementias
Demonstrates understanding of the emotional stress of having a loved one with dementia by responding professionally and sensitively to the family’s needs
Possesses knowledge of policies in the Harbor Family Handbook
Experience implementing, and evaluating the programs and services for residents with cognitive impairment
Develops, models, delegates, organizes, assigns, and leads meaningful Harbor programming scheduled 7 days a week beginning after breakfast until 7p.m., following the Benchmark Harbor Programming standards
Meeting residents’ physical, social , cognitive, emotional and spiritual needs through meaningful programming
Creates, organizes and models the use of at least 5 Treasure Chests based on resident’s interests
Assures that all residents have a completed Positive Interaction Profile and support families in the completion if needed
Monitors all programs for their appropriateness, success, engagement and enjoyment of residents

Job Requirements

The candidate for this position requires an undergraduate degree. The position calls for a detailed individual with proven leadership skills and prior management experience. The ability to connect with others and build relationships with positive outcomes using an influential skill set is a key attribute. Computer skills such as Microsoft Office, Excel and YARDI will be used on a daily basis. This candidate will demonstrate strong communication, organization, prioritization, multi- tasking, grace under pressure and a “can do” attitude skill set.
