Position Opening: Associate Dean, Division of Undergraduate Studies. Start date negotiable but hope to have someone take the position by Fall 2013.
We seek to appoint a full-time Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies who can provide leadership and guidance while focusing particularly on issues related to student learning, curriculum, student-faculty engagement, assessment, and graduation and retention efforts. The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with the Dean, the Assistant Dean, and the program directors within the division to increase the effectiveness of programs in the division and they will work closely with the Undergraduate Council, the Student Learning Outcomes Committee, the General Education Committee, with other administrators across campus, and will represent the Dean at other meetings and events when the Dean is off campus.
We seek an individual who has a strong record of research and/or scholarship, teaching experience in higher education, a terminal degree in their field, and a deep commitment to undergraduate education; someone with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse students, faculty, administrators, and staff; experience with assessment programs, student learning outcomes; experience working with academic student support programs such as those currently housed in the Division of Undergraduate Studies; at least two years in a leadership position in higher education (minimally as department chair or program director); experience with interdisciplinary approaches to undergraduate education and information, communication, and technology initiatives; experience working with budgets, staff support, and strategic planning; interest and involvement in international programs is highly desirable. Finally, we are looking for someone with a sense of humor who can work flexibly, collaboratively, and cooperatively as part of a larger team.
Background: The Division of Undergraduate Studies at San Diego State University houses the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Center for Regional Sustainability, the Common Experience, Service Learning and Civic Engagement Programs, the Compact Scholars Program, the Faculty-Student Mentoring Program, the University Honors Program, Liberal Studies, Interdisciplinary Majors in Three Departments, and the Thomas B. Day Student Success Programs. The Division also houses the Office of Academic Scholarships, an International Coordinator, a Director for Development, the Early Assistance Program, and is home to undeclared students.
In addition, the Division is also responsible for several university-wide mandates. It provides coordination and evaluation of the undergraduate programs at San Diego State University and has general responsibility for the undergraduate curriculum and for academic standards that affect undergraduate education. Additionally, it coordinates the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) re-accreditation process, the assessment of student preparedness in writing and mathematics at the freshman and transfer levels, the assessment of student learning in General Education and across campus, and the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement.

The starting date for the position is negotiable but we hope to have someone in the position by Fall 2013. Salary will be commensurate with experience and service. This position is in the Management Personnel Plan and can include tenure and academic rank.
