Stanford School of Medicine Career Center (SoMCC) is fast paced center that supports the professional development of medical and life science trainees, and develops relationships with organizations interested to engage with our campus community. The Associate Director for Educational Resources and Client Services manages the design, development, and delivery of curricula and programs focusing on professional skills/training and insights into roles for scientists and clinicians (i.e. PhD/MS/MD/PD) across multiple employment sectors. The Assistant also manages relationships with both internal (Stanford) and external (industry and government) clients. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Educational Resource Management
  • Manage the expansion of career-related programs, workshops, and curricula
  • Design and build curricular concepts and rationale, structure courses, and develop depth around ‘tracks’ to offer greater coverage in identified fields and sectors (i.e. academia, entrepreneurship, media, etc.)
  • Define and sequence program calendar to complement other SoM programs, and those of other Schools, departments, and groups across campus
  • Select technologies to enhance learning and expand utilization of web-based delivery models
  • Compare and evaluate prospective benefits between different programmatic directions relative to various constituencies
Client Services
  • Customize, develop, and deliver specialized career advising services to targeted groups and populations according to discipline and experience level
  • Provide direct guidance and support to trainees and alumni regarding career management and advancement
  • Select organizations to approach, recommend SoMCC programs, and develop opportunities to build/enhance interactions
  • Represent Stanford through outreach to prospective speakers (both internal and external) including senior executives, global subject matter experts, faculty, and government officials
Knowledge and experience

  • Masters’ or advanced degree and three years related experience required
  • Substantial knowledge of professional opportunities for biomedical researchers and clinicians within the following employment sectors: academia/education, healthcare, biotech/pharma, medical devices/diagnostics, consulting, banking/finance, government/non-profit, law, and media
  • Experience with professional advising/counseling
  • Experience with curriculum development, design, and classroom management
  • Working knowledge of hiring practices, organizational behavior, and human development principles
  • Executive search and recruitment fundamentals
  • Proficient with data management and office software programs (excel, word, power point, access, etc.), and web-based networking and media technologies
  • Five years related experience preferred
  • Broad and specific knowledge of Stanford’s medical and life science training programs and related curricula across campus
  • Awareness of major business drivers, global forces and influences, organizational structures, labor market trends, emerging functional roles, skill set requirements, HR/recruitment practices, and professional opportunities/employment sectors
  • Advanced understanding of various technical science fields, vision to see how/where these intersect, and an ability to formulate co-curricular seminars illustrating how/where the convergence of technologies will impact the biomedical science enterprise (i.e. research and training, licensing and commercialization, mergers and acquisitions, university-industry relations, etc.)
  • Knowledge of medical school trainee population (i.e. graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, medical students and residents), including ability to discuss aspects of their respective fields and provide support regarding professional development plans, goals, and strategies for achieving them
  • Knowledge of career development resources and training tools
