The position has responsibility for a team of editors working on Platts’ Central Editing Desk in the US. As a manager on the CED, the person filling this job must have a global perspective, though his/her team will be completely located in the US, and also must be able to understand the workings of all of the sectors that Platts covers: oil, power, petrochemicals and metalsThe role is strategic content development as well as stewarding day-to-day editorial operations.
Responsibilities:
Establishes and leads the publication processes/workflow for a real-time desk.
Determines what content will be prioritized for publication
Regularly reviews the quality and content of news in a sector/product area and develops and maintains Platts journalistic standards and practices
Establishes editorial quality and operational metrics
Collaborates with production/editorial operations teams in the publishing process
Able to conduct primary reporting and editing functions on an as-needed basis
Manages staff scheduling and assignments
Coaches and mentors staff
Conducts staff performance review
Initiates staff training and development efforts
In charge of hiring process for department
Develops managerial talent within the team
Continuously evaluates editorial content and determines what has relevance to readership
Engages subscribers to better understand market and trends; and to increase understanding around reader relevance
Leverages understanding of reader relevance to continuously develop value-added news/information
Continuously learns and analyzes market issues and looks for news and enterprise story opportunities.
Develops and maintains productive relationships with a broad base of key industry sources and can leverage them in the editorial process
Qualifications
Required:
BA degree in journalism with approximately 10 years of reporting/writing/editing experience; or a graduate degree in journalism with business studies or background with 5 years of reporting/writing/editing or analytical work experience.
Excellent communication skills that implement good listening, clear writing style; and strong verbal skills. The ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities internally and externally.
Strong leadership ability which utilizes influence, and promotes team collaboration and development, as well as personal accountability.
Leverages numeracy skills in the editorial process, including and understanding of statistics and finance. Solid understanding of economics and risk management principles.
Excellent at identifying improvements and efficiencies and implementing processes that continually promote productivity and quality improvements.
Excellent critical thinking skills and expert at problem/conflict resolution.
Strong technical competency and computer skills couple with a good knowledge and utilization of Microsoft Excel ; Microsoft Office suite (Word, Powerpoint, Outlook…); and good keyboarding skills (both speed and accuracy), and is able to adopt new technologies and champion those changes internally.
