Job Descriptions:
The Center for English Language Learning and Assessment (ELLA) is seeking an Associate Research Scientist. The ELLA Center conducts foundational research advancing English language learning and assessment for learners around the world and provides research support for all English language assessments including the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) family, the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) family, and English assessments for English learners in the US.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide scientific and technical skills in conceptualizing, designing, obtaining support for, conducting and managing research, and disseminating results of research studies in the area of English Language Learning and Assessment (ELLA).
Generate or contribute to new or modified theories, applications and methodologies related to language learning and assessment.
Contribute to the planning and implementation of a comprehensive long-term research agenda in ELLA.
Contribute to the development of new products or services for education based on scientific principles drawn from the research literature.
Assist in designing and conducting scientific studies functioning as an expert in the major facets of the project; research activities may include validation of existing assessments, development and validation of new kinds of measures, investigations of new assessment capabilities, and studies of the role of English language assessment in classroom contexts.
Contribute to the development of proposals for research projects and obtaining financial support for new or continuing research activities.
Participate in dissemination activities through the publications of research papers in peer review journals and in the ETS Research Report series, the issuing of progress and technical reports, the presentation of seminars at major conferences and at ETS, or the use of other appropriate communication vehicles, including books and chapters, that impact practice in the field or at ETS.
Develop professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators.
Required Experience:
EDUCATION
A Ph.D. in applied linguistics, language education, cognitive science, psychology, or a related field is required.
EXPERIENCE
Evidence of independent substantive research experience in English language learning and assessment is required.
