Exponent’s Biomechanics Practice engages in a variety of consulting work analyzing human kinematics, injury mechanics, injury potential, and injury mitigation in accidents involving vehicles, consumer products, sports, and the environment. This includes, but is not limited to, automobile, heavy truck, bus, motorcycle or pedestrian collisions; slip, trip or fall incidents; sporting accidents; incidents involving construction or other heavy equipment; and workplace or commercial accidents. We have an extensive test facility located in Phoenix, Arizona, maintain a family of crash test dummies and associated instrumentation, and operate a number of smaller test laboratories in other regional offices that allow us to perform component-level testing, full-scale crash testing, and computer simulation in support of our biomechanical investigations and research activities.
The Biomechanics Practice is currently hiring for Associates in our Phoenix office. The individuals in this position will be primarily responsible for executing biomechanics litigation consulting projects related to human injury analyses. This will involve analysis of the human body response to forces generated during an incident to determine potential for injury, analysis of the incident to determine if and/or how an injury occurred, and analysis of how such injuries could have been mitigated (e.g., seatbelt use).
Key responsibilities for this position include:
Extensive review of both technical and non-technical materials to identify key facts and information (this may include reviewing police reports, medical/autopsy records, legal pleadings, expert reports, deposition testimony, photographs, vehicle specifications, and other documentation)
Research and review relevant scientific journals, publications, and testing, and be responsible for analysis and synthesis of technical biomechanical issues involving kinematics, dynamics, mechanisms of injury, and human tolerance
Clearly communicate findings via written reports and presentations
Demonstrate the ability to synthesize technical information into an easily understood format suitable for presentation to technical and non-technical audiences The individuals in this position will be working in a small team environment within the larger company-wide Biomechanics Practice, and as such these individuals will be expected to actively create and pursue opportunities to develop a positive work flow. While balancing the demands of project work, these individuals are expected to participate in original research, publish papers in technical journals, and present findings at conferences.
Qualifications for this position include:
Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field
At least 2 years’ experience conducting technical analyses pertaining to injury potential, injury mechanisms, and injury mitigation in accident scenarios
Prior exposure to litigation consulting is desirable
Effective leadership skills and the ability to interact with a wide variety of professionals, including engineers, scientists, managers, attorneys, and administrative staff
