The Auto Mechanic is responsible for complex automotive inspection, maintenance, repair and modification. Under general supervision, incumbents perform duties involving the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of complex automotive and special equipment, as well as technically involved auxiliary and control systems. Work is highly specialized in nature and requires an extensive and sound knowledge of automotive technology and practical analyses and skill. Work is performed under circumstances requiring unusual techniques and exceptional judgment.


Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates MUST present ALL of the following qualifications in order to be considered:
* High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution
* Three years journey-level experience in performing skilled automotive work involving
inspection, diagnosis, modification, maintenance, and repair on complex automotive
and other special equipment.
* Applicants must possess a valid NY or NJ driver's license, with a Class B Commercial
Driver's License (CDL) with the Air Brakes endorsement or higher. Applicants without a CDL
must possess a CDL Permit upon offer of employment, and will be required to obtain a Class
B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with one endorsement within three months of

* New York State and/or New Jersey State Emissions Inspector License. Applicants without a
New York State and/or New Jersey State Emissions Inspector License will be required to
obtain within six months of employment.

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written test, which will measure the candidate¿s basic knowledge in areas such as: Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems. Engine Performance, Drivability and Emissions, Accessories; Prints, Schematics, and Diagrams; Power Transmission, Lubrication, Fuel Systems, Cooling and Heating Systems, Mechanical Maintenance and Equipment Installation, Shop Machines, Tools, Materials, and Equipment, Internal Combustion Engines (Diesel and Gasoline), Inspection, Recordkeeping and Mathematics; Pneumatics, Pumps, Piping, and Hydraulics; and Safety.

Candidates with current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master certification as Automobile Technician, Truck Technician and/or Truck Equipment Technician will be exempt from the written test.. Candidates with current ASE certification in all of the following areas will also be exempt from the written test: Automobile Technician, Advanced Engine Performance Specialist, Medium/Heavy Truck Technician, Medium/Heavy Vehicle Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist, Compressed Natural gas Technician. Applicants seeking written test waiver should indicate ASE certification type and number on your resume.

Successful written test or exempt applicants will be asked to participate in a hands-on practical exam designed to measure the candidate¿s knowledge and skill in areas such as Mechanical, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, and/or Electrical/Electronic inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair at a later date.

Fully test qualified candidates will be subject to a comprehensive background check and will be asked to provide copies of the required licenses and certifications for verification.
