Performs difficult skilled and intermediate technical work maintaining and repairing a variety of automotive equipment in the City fleet; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions*:
Ability to perform heavy lifting up to 75 lbs.; Ability to work in adverse positions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, and hazards.
Operates specialized automotive diagnostic testing equipment in the diagnosis of mechanical problems, determines required repair or replacement of parts and initiates repair; Performs preventive maintenance inspections; services and repairs as necessary; Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services medium and heavy duty equipment including buses and garbage trucks; Performs repairs and replacement on diesel driven equipment; Repairs brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies; Overhauls, tunes and adjusts engines using specialized and standard test equipment; Does diversified electrical and electronic work on automotive equipment, troubleshooting problems and repairing or replacing defective parts, repairs automotive air conditioning systems; Uses computer to initiate, process and maintain work orders, records and reports; Transport vehicles to and from outside servicers; Attend a variety of courses and seminars to maintain technical knowledge and skills; May perform minor body and paint work; Inspects city vehicles including buses for compliance to state and department transportation; Operates wrecker when needed; Maintain tool shop and work area in clean and orderly state; Responds for snow and ice removal and other storm and emergency events as directed; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule including on-call schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
Instructs and participates in work with subordinate employees; Assists in maintaining cleanliness of working areas.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment including electronic diagnostic equipment used in the repair of cars, trucks, busses, construction and maintenance equipment; Thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, welding equipment; Ability to diagnose defects in the drive trains, chassis and other components of automotive equipment; Ability to detect by inspection worn or broken automotive parts; Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; Ability to systematically repair computerized automotive systems and drivability problems; Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics; Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in repair of light to heavy vehicles required; Ability to read and write and understand technical manuals and warning labels and symbols.
Special License and Certificates:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid class A commercial drivers license with Hazmat Endorsement and State Inspections License within six weeks of employment.
