NOTE : This position is located in Ona, Florida. Ona is 3 1/2 hours from Gainesville.
40% Supervise and assist in the daily care and feeding of animals in grazing and feeding trials. This includes care of animals, accurate weighing of feed, mixing of supplements, collection, processing and laboratory analysis of feed and forage samples, sample collection from esophageally/ruminally fistulated animals, fecal and urine collection from animals, weighing animals, accurate record keeping, and cleaning facilities. Weekend work is involved.
20% Collection and analysis of biological samples, and respiration calorimetry measurements. This includes proper collection and handling of blood samples, minor surgical procedures for collection of tissue biopsy samples, and time sensitive laboratory analysis. Respiration calorimetry measurements include the use of heart rate monitors and gas exchange instrumentation. Weekend work is involved.
10% Supervise and assist in conducting metabolism trials. This includes daily feeding of animals, collection and processing of biological samples, mixing research diets and keeping complete and accurate records. Weekend work involved.
25% Conduct laboratory analysis of samples. This includes standard analytical procedures for feedstuffs ( IVOMD , NDF , ADF , CP, DM, OM, lignin, ADIN , etc), and assays for biological samples (protein and metabolite assays, tissue oxygen consumption, gene expression techniques). This involves use of the analytical balance, oxygen measurement chamber and thermocyclers, conducting the wet chemistry analysis, and calculating results.
5% Record, collect and process data from all research projects and conduct statistical analysis. Train new students on the use of, maintain functionality of, and keep records for scientific instrumentation. This involves use of a personal computer.
A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and one year of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Knowledge or experience with cattle husbandry.
