Subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:
Position is located within the Medical Research Service at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Durham, NC. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Instructing others in the methods used within the laboratory;
Performing experiments using transgenic and knockout mice;
Performing systematic blood pressure measurements in awake mice;
Collecting urine specimens from live mice using metabolic cages;
Performing experiments using immunohistochemistry to examine cellular/molecular determinants of glomerular injury;
Performing flow cytometric analysis to analyze protein and mRNA;
Extracting RNA and analyzing changes in message in kidneys of mice;
Performing Western blot analysis of protein expression;
Recording experiments to include protocols, measurements, observations;
Retrieving and interpreting data from notebooks as requested.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm
NOTE : This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 13 month). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.

REQUIRES: A degree from an accredited college or university, leading to a bachelors or higher, in biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE : A combination of education and experience -- Courses equivalent to a major in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position and related experience. If you meet the basic educational requirement by a combination, your experience must be documented in your resume and transcripts are required.
IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT, THIS POSITION REQUIRES: One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience include : knowledge of molecular and cellular biology; carrying out experiments using mouse physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology; performing experiments using immunohistochemistry and related techniques to examine the cellular and molecular determinants of glomerular injury; performing experiments using transgenic mice; managing a mouse colony; and maintaining experimental records of measurements, observations, etc. To receive credit for these skills they must be documented in your resume.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: Successful completion of two (2) full years of graduate education leading to a master's degree at an accredited institution in a subject area directly related to the duties of this position may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-09 grade level. Eighteen (18) semester hours is usually considered equivalent to one year of study. If you are using education to qualify, you must submit transcripts with your application.
COMBINATION: A combination of specialized experience and related graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position is fully qualifying at the GS-09 grade level . If you qualify based on a combination, your experience must documented in your resume and transcripts are required.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
1. Ability to carry out experiments using mouse physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology.
2. S kill in maintaining and interpreting data in experimental records.
3. A bility to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with people from varying backgrounds and different levels of understanding.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work requires long periods of continuous activity, well beyond the standard working hours. Position also does not lend itself to regular scheduled breaks. Thus, a flexible work schedule must be maintained. Work requires moderate agility, manual dexterity, good eyesight and tolerance for standing.

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
