POSITION SUMMARY: The position of Backup and Recovery Engineer II reports to and operates under the direction of the Supervisor Enterprise Storage. This position interfaces at all level within IT regarding best practice methods and techniques of Enterprise Storage Backup and Recovery Management. This individual will provide second level technical expertise and support for Backup Recovery initiatives, resolution and issues. Additionally, this position will require scheduled on-call responsibilities outside of the normal working hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: .
  • Model ethical behavior and execute job responsibilities in accordance with Citizens core values and ethics policies
  • Provide technical assistance and occasional leadership for enterprise backup and recovery initiatives
  • Interface with Infrastructure, Application Development and business unit teams to gather, define and document data protection and recovery requirements as directed by the Backup and Recovery Engineer III or Supervisor
  • Collaborate with the Network, Storage, Database, Disaster Recovery and Security and other teams to recommend, design and implement Backup Recovery solutions and designs
  • Participate in the development, testing and validation of B/R and Disaster Recovery plans
  • Participate in supporting any audit requests and findings relating to Backup, Data Retention and Recovery processes as directed by the Supervisor Enterprise Storage
  • Manage steps for dynamic changes as they relate to change management, patch and security application, system updates and upgrades. This includes determining the need for change, opening change tickets, providing operational and customer notifications and managing the steps to completion
  • Analyze backup equipment performance, collect information, and prepare summary reports as required by management and proactive support of the B/R infrastructure and environment
  • Ensure the use of industry best practice for availability, reliability, utilization, resource optimization and scalability of backup and recovery methods as applicable to Citizens’ business needs
  • Create, validate and implement BURA related request-for-changes which includes a review and understanding of the detailed change activity, or implementation plans, and the respective impact of the change
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of [pre-production | release management] testing processes for current, new, and modified backup appliances and software
  • Serve as escalation point for all backup and recovery related incidents

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Stay informed on B/R related laws, trends, and issues, including current and emerging technologies and best practices
  • Advise, counsel, and educate management teams on the relative importance of these issues; recommend and implement changes where necessary in accordance with the organizational change management policy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and professional appearance
  • Ability to develop technical design documents and business cases from an enterprise data management policy that speaks to the recommendation for the B/R, disaster recovery and business continuance architectures
  • Knowledge of the formal practice of change management, configuration management and release management
  • Ability to participate in a scheduled weekly on call rotation to support a 24Hr/Day x 7Day/Week operational environment
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • Ability to conduct research into backup and recovery issues, standards, and products
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language
  • Strong ability to work autonomously with keen attention to detail
  • Ability to exhibit good judgment in selecting the methods and techniques for analysis, development, test and analysis of technical backup/restore products and systems
  • Ability to document and implement processes to enforce and monitor data retention policies and Service Level Agreements
  • Ability to occasionally work shifts outside of normal business hours
  • Ability for occasional overnight travel

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 4 years relevant work experience OR a combination of college education and relevant work experience equivalent to 4 years
  • Five or more years of experience in Backup and Recovery role
  • Hands-on experience with EMC [Legato] Networker in a distributed platform environment
  • Hands-on experience with Backup and Recovery of IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL
  • Experience in storage (tape and disk) and backup and recovery architecture design and solutions, theories, principles and practices
  • Hands-on experience with EMC [Legato] Networker 7.X storage nodes, clients and modules
  • Experience with developing and implementing effective backup and recovery policies for medium to large data centers
  • Hands-on experience in the lifecycle [architect, build, test, maintain] of activities surrounding backup and recovery as well as disaster recovery
  • Hands-on experience with robotic and EMC EDL/CDL [Virtual Tape Libraries] Solutions in a SAN environment
  • Hands-on experience with designing, building, installing, configuring, and supporting EMC Networker backup servers [storage nodes] and software
  • Hands-on experience with problem systems, data backup and troubleshooting
  • Experience with physical tape management strategies including the tape cloning/copy process, offsite tape media management [tape export and tape import]
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows 2003/2008, Exchange 2003/2010 and SQL 2005/2008 as it relates to backup and recovery of files and databases
  • Experience in developing and submitting data archive audits and compliance reports to governing bodies, legal entities, and/or other internal / external compliance authorities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in the administration of EMC NetWorker Licenses
  • Experience with EMC Backup Advisor or Data Protection Advisor
  • Experience with backup and recovery of NAS file shares, CIFS and other NAS associated storage
  • Experience with De-Duplication methodology and systems
  • Experience with AVAMAR
  • Project management/project lifecycle experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of ITIL
  • Insurance Industry experience
  • Experience with Veritas Backup Exec/NetBackup applications and monitoring tools
  • Experience with AS/400, AIX and Linux systems
  • 2 or more years working knowledge of SANs
  • Working knowledge of backing up and recovery of a virtualized IT infrastructure
  • 2 or more years working knowledge of EMC Storage Solutions
  • Certification as or working towards certification as:
    • EMC Proven Professional-Backup and Recovery Certification
    • EMC Proven Professional-NetWorker Engineer
    • Disaster Recovery and Business Continuance Certifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Occasionally requires the ability to move up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time, hear and converse over the telephone, and key frequently on a computer (4 or more hours per day).
