Under limited supervision, provides assessment, treatment, counseling and case management services to clients with mental health and/or substance abuse disorder needs in the criminal justice system.

· Coordinates with the County Sheriff and Probation Departments, hospitals, courts and other justice agencies, in support of persons in the forensics systems requiring mental health and/or substance abuse services; coordinates and provides continuity of care, including needs for placement in treatment or hospital settings, outpatient services, or other rehabilitative care related to mental health and substance abuse issues. Provides assessments, treatment planning and psycho-therapeutic evaluation of all clients assigned; consults with physician and social workers on concerns and clients’ needs.

· Provides case management services for assigned clients; documents clinical files and charts for all client contacts, including consultations with other agencies; assesses lethality factors; works as part of a team to provide a treatment program for the client; acts as advocate with appropriate agencies for individual clients.

· Participates in the chart review process, summarizes observations and provides information on clients to the team members. Supports and enhances the clients’ emotional stability; explains nature of illness, plan of care, procedures and treatments to clients, family and significant others; monitors, reviews and implements counseling and treatment plans.

· Develops and enhances cooperative professional relationships with local community agencies.

· Processes paperwork for clients; coordinates services with medical support, outpatient, emergency rooms, law enforcement, pharmacy, and other necessary agencies.

· Updates and maintains a variety of files, records, charts and other documents; gathers, compiles and synthesizes data for management purposes; maintains appropriate records and prepares reports.

· Adheres to the confidentiality standards of the Privacy Act of 1974, {U.S.C. § 552A} as amended.

· Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

· A Master's degree from an accredited graduate school or program in the fields of Social Work, Marriage Family Therapy, Counseling, Psychology, Nursing; or a Ph.D. in Psychology from an accredited graduate school or program.

· Possession of a valid California license as either a: Clinical Social Worker or Marriage Family Therapist (Board of Behavioral Sciences); Clinical Nurse Specialist, Psychiatric (Board of Registered Nursing); or Psychologist (Board of Psychology). Candidates from out of state that hold a comparable license may be considered with the stipulation that they are eligible for an appropriate California license and receive the license within one (1) year from the date of appointment to this classification.

· A valid State of California driver's license is required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

· Working conditions are various home, jail and Health Clinic settings; involves the potential for high stress levels and exposure to hostile situations; some non-standard work hours are required.

· Must work with a clinically challenging client population; must be able to read and respond to subtle behavioral clues, and maintain professional composure and effectiveness.

· May be required to lift and carry items up to 30 pounds.
