This position will work with one other Benefits Specialist to administer all employee benefit programs for the University faculty and staff.
This position will: enter full-time employee transactions into HR systems; conduct new employee benefits orientation; coordinate open enrollment; disseminate benefit information; FMLA and COBRA notifications; conduct exit interviews and may represent the University in VEC telephonic hearings; coordinate workers' compensation administration; administer the short-term disability program.
Knowledge of HR principles and practices, especially in the area of benefits and workers' compensation. Experience as a HR Professional with primary assignments in benefits coordination and administration. Knowledge of effective customer service and problem-solving techniques. Effective time and project management skills. Experience with software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. Ability to generate and analyze data. Ability to enter a high volume of transactions accurately. Ability to collect, assemble, process, and file information using manual and automated systems. Ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply policies and procedures related to benefits. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing, with diverse customers. Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work with numerical data and to make calculations with speed and accuracy. Degree in HR or a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia benefits programs and leave practices. Experience with the Commonwealth's Benefits Eligibility System (BES), Personnel Management Information System (PMIS), Virginia Retirement System (VRS) and short-term disability program (VSDP). Experience in a community college, university, or Commonwealth of Virginia agency. Experience processing workers' compensation claims.
