Job Responsibilities

El Valor de Nuestra Salud [The Value of Our Health] is a 5-year study (2010-2014) funded by the National Cancer Institute to design, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a multi-component in-store intervention to increase the purchase and consumption of healthy foods among customers of Latino grocery stores in San Diego County. The intervention will target structural as well as social aspects of the stores and marketing of healthy foods. Intervention activities will be conducted at Latino grocery stores and will involve store managers, employees, and customers. Under supervision of the Intervention Coordinator, the Intervention Assistant will: -Implement point-of-purchase marketing campaign in grocery stores, including rotation of materials according to schedule -Assist with, and possibly conduct, project trainings with store employees -Prepare for and perform food demonstrations (taste testings) at participating grocery stores, including food shopping and preparing recipes -Follow study protocols and procedures to ensure consistency in implementation of activities -Assist with preparation and development of intervention materials -Complete process evaluation activities necessary to monitor intervention implementation -Perform routine mailings to study participants -Track and log all intervention activities to ensure compliance with protocols and schedules -Assist with office tasks to prepare for intervention activities and process evaluation data collection -Instruct and work with student interns to perform above activities -Communicate with store personnel to schedule activities -Attend trainings and team meetings -Perform other duties as assigned Work will occur at Latino grocery stores or other community settings throughout San Diego County and in the project research office in Kearny Mesa. Regular travel to field sites throughout San Diego County is required. Hours will vary as we work with different stores. Current requirements include weekend availability.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be bilingual in Spanish and English to work with Spanish and English speaking store customers, employees, and store managers Completion of sufficient lower division college coursework, preferably in nutrition, behavioral or health sciences, or marketing Or the equivalent of at least one year related experience Food safety certification will be required but may be obtained after hire

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Publisher), e-mail, and internet. Reliable transportation to travel and transport study equipment to grocery stores and community settings throughout San Diego County (mileage reimbursement policy exists) and/or valid CA driver's license and proof of insurance. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills. Self-starter. Work effectively as part of a team; work well with a variety of people, particularly store personnel and customers. Comfortable speaking in front of groups. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to quickly learn and implement study protocols and procedures; complete detailed work accurately and efficiently; follow written and verbal instructions. Adaptable to schedule changes and different working environments; ability to work variable hours to meet project needs.

Preferred Education/Certifications

Undergraduate degree, preferably in nutrition, behavioral or health sciences or marketing.

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

Experience in health or behavioral science research projects or health/nutrition field(s), or experience working with the Latino population Food handling experience Experience with graphic design computer programs (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, InDesign)

Working Conditions

Work will occur at Latino grocery stores or other community settings throughout San Diego County and in the project research office in Kearny Mesa. Regular travel to field sites throughout San Diego County is required. Hours will vary as we work with different stores to include weekend schedule availability.
