Job Responsibilities

A bilingual (English/Spanish) research assistant is needed to support "Project Fresh Air" a behavioral research study funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Project Fresh Air is a five year study designed to test a real-time intervention to reduce secondhand smoke exposure in homes of children ages 0-6 years. Study participants will be recruited throughout San Diego Country. Under the general supervision of the Project and Intervention Coordinator, the bilingual research assistant will perform duties such as, recruitment and retention, screening and interviewing, health education and coaching, data collection and entry, urine collection and processing, and environmental data collection. On the job training will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of sufficient undergraduate or graduate coursework in the following: Health science, public health, psychology, sociology, social work, child development, education, biology, nursing, epidemiology, or related field to successfully perform the required duties of the position or equivalent of two years progressively responsible related experience Bilingual (Spanish/English). Ability to speak, read and write Spanish and English fluently

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of basic computer skills (e.g. keyboarding, MS Word, internet) Strong communication and interpersonal skills Well-organized with strong attention to detail Dependable with professional demeanor Engaging personality, ability to effectively build trust and rapport, and ability to express enthusiasm for the study Ability to follow research protocol Ability to work a flexible schedule (i.e. days, evenings and weekends)

Preferred Education/Certifications

Bachelor's degree in health science, public health or related field Human Subjects Certification

Experience working with members of diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds Experience working in a research environment, maintaining confidential records, recruiting participants, collecting data and conducting interviews Ability to interpret graphs

Working Conditions

Work will be carried out in an office, in private homes, and a lab. Travel is required to offices, participant homes, and other locations in San Diego County Required participation in paid in-person and online trainings, team meetings, and maintain current human subjects and biosafety certifications Ability to lift up to 20 pounds Ability to obtain a valid Driver's License and insurance and/or reliable transporation Successful completion of fingerprinting process is required prior to hire
