Job Responsibilities

El Valor de Nuestra Salud [The Value of Our Health] is a 5-year study (2010-2014) funded by the National Cancer Institute to design, implement, and evaluate the an in-store intervention to increase the purchase and consumption of healthy foods among customers of Latino grocery stores in San Diego County. Two part-time assistants are needed for recruitment and evaluation activities which will be conducted with managers, employees, and customers of Latino grocery stores. Most of these activities will be conducted in Spanish. Under supervision of the Evaluation Coordinator, the Research Assistants will: perform recruitment and evaluation activities, including interviews and weight measures, with store employees and customers contact participants by phone to schedule evaluation activities perform data coding, entry and verification assist with preparation and development of project materials complete periodic mailings to participants possibly perform store audits/observations for key features and products assist with all office tasks related to recruitment and evaluation activities and data management attend trainings and team meetings other duties as assigned Under the direction of the Project Manager, one of the research assistant positions may include recruitment of stores to participate in the study. The additional activities involved in this include: identification of stores that are eligible to participate meeting with store owners and/or managers to explain the study and invite their stores to participate complete study agreement forms with store owners and gather basic store information to facilitate study activities

Minimum Qualifications

Must be bilingual in Spanish and English to work with Spanish and English speaking store customers, employees, and managers. Completion of sufficient lower division college coursework, preferably in nutrition, behavioral, or health sciences, to successfully perform the required duties of the position or the equivalent of at least one year related experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Publisher), e-mail, and internet. Reliable vehicle to travel and transport equipment to grocery stores and community settings throughout San Diego County (mileage reimbursement policy exists), valid CA driver's license and proof of insurance required. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills. Self-starter with a positive attitude. Work effectively as part of a team; work well with a variety of people, particularly store personnel and customers. Strong problem-solving skills. Ability to quickly learn and implement research protocols, methods, and procedures for data collection and data entry; complete detailed work accurately and efficiently; follow written and verbal instructions. Adaptable to schedule changes and different working environments; able & willing to work variable hours to meet project needs. Field work will occur seven days a week from morning through evening. Weekend availability is required.

Preferred Education/Certifications

Undergraduate degree, preferably in nutrition, behavioral, or health sciences.

Preferred Experience/Special Skills

Experience in health or behavioral science research projects or health/fitness fields(s), interview administration experience, data entry experience (preferably using SPSS or Access), or experience working with the Latino population are preferred.

Working Conditions

Work will occur at Latino grocery stores, participant homes, and other community settings throughout San Diego County and in the project research office in Kearny Mesa. Regular travel to field sites throughout San Diego County is required. Hours will vary and include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends to accommodate fieldwork needs. Fingerprint clearance is required prior to hire.
