Provides a full variety of technical veterinary pathology procedures involved in the postmortem examinations of a variety of exotic zoo animals including mammals, avians, reptiles and amphibians.
Creates and updates databases for tracking stored animal material, photographs, and histology slides; also searches such databases for researchers and provides animal material and pathology specimens to researchers.
Supervises the necropsy facility which includes the cleaning, disinfecting and maintenance of the facility, all instruments and equipment (including laboratory safety and handling of bio-hazardous materials).
Experience: One year of full-time experience at the GS-8 level that is close or similar to the work of this job. The experience includes activities such as assisting with the prosection/dissection of dead, non-preserved animals, tissue sample collection, working with formalin fixed tissues, exposure to potentially bio-hazardous material, working with sharp instruments, trimming tissues for histological processing, data entry, sample organization / tracking, written report production, laboratory maintenance, and disinfection. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Substitution of Education for Specialized Experience : Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent degree in biology, chemistry, or related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements. HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
Ability to perform and assist in a complete animal necropsy on a variety of species and appropriately and process the resulting specimens.
Ability to maintain valuable research materials, and assist with the advancement and diffusion of data.
Skill with common necropsy equipment, facilities and maintenance.
Skill with laboratory safety; handling of bio-hazardous materials.
Knowledge of biology, anatomy, and zoology.
Ability to communicate, interact and project participation.
Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
