The Midwest Area, National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Bacterial Foodborne Pathogens & Mycology Research Unit located in Peoria, Illinois is seeking a Temporary Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Microbiology) to provide technical support to the ARS Culture Collection, the largest public collection of microbial germplasm in the U.S. The incumbent will provide support of the collection's important mission of preserving and distributing strains to scientist throughout the world.

TERM Appointment NTE 13 Months (may be extended up to a total of 4 years without further competition)

DUTIES:
The incumbent will assist in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory environment including pathogenic microbes; performs routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment; maintains, calibrates and modifies equipment and automated systems, collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records; maintains records, and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources; keeps detailed records of experimental data; data entry; tabulates, statistically analyzes and summaries data using personal computers and software packages; maintains inventory of chemical's, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological) and keeps work-site in a neat and orderly manner.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-05: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service OR Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study in or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position (microbiology).

GS-06: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service OR

1/2 year of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position.

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:
1. Knowledge of microbiology methods and procedures in order to preserve and distribute strains.
2. Skill in aseptic laboratory techniques and handing of various types of microorganisms.
3. Ability to operate a personal computer and software programs for word processing, spreadsheets and database usage.
