This position is located in the Residue Chemistry and Predictive Microbiology Research Unit at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland. The unit conducts research to develop predictive microbiology models for improving the safety of poultry foods contaminated with human bacterial pathogens, such as Salmonella spp. The incumbent will assist the scientist in one or more phases of the research program pertaining to the microbiological safety of poultry meat and poultry meat products.

Major Duties:
This position is located in the Residue Chemistry and Predictive Microbiology Research Unit at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Maryland. The unit conducts research to develop predictive microbiology models for improving the safety of poultry foods contaminated with human bacterial pathogens, such as Salmonella spp. The incumbent will assist the scientist in one or more phases of the research program pertaining to the microbiological safety of poultry meat and poultry meat products.

Some of the major duties include the following:
Assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory.

Performs routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.

Maintains, calibrates and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records; maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.

Keeps detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.

Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements:
GS-05: One year (1) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in the federal service OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with (a) major study in an appropriate field of biological science OR (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of course such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours must have been directly related to the position.

Additional Requirements:
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

1. Knowledge of basic principles of biological sciences.

2. Ability to operate, modify, calibrate and maintain specialized equipment.

3. Ability to collect, analyze and summarize data.
