KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:
Employee will serve as a Biological Science Laboratory Technician (BSLT) within Research Service at the VA Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC), Ann Arbor MI, performing duties that are designed to orient the BSLT in the mission and work of the investigator's laboratory. Duties include, but may not be limited to: Performs chemical, radioisotope, and biological experiments in the specialty area of the laboratory, establish analyses, tests, physical measurements and the operation and calibration of common analytical instruments, which may involve small or large animal surgery. Performs routine calculations such as determining concentration or the amount of a substance in total samples based on analysis of a known portion of the sample. Writes laboratory reports and maintain complete records of all procedures and experiments performed, as well as documenting the method used and results obtained. Utilizes reference material from the library and other appropriate sources. Various laboratory equipment will be used during experiments and you will be expected to troubleshoot problems, decide which data is acceptable and determine the best way to present results.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 366 days). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration. Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Requires Six (6) months of General experience AND Six (6) months of Specialized experience.

General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized Experience: Experience equivalent to at least the GS-3 level in the Federal service that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position Biological Science Laboratory Technician to be filled. The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Examples of qualifying specialized experience includes: Research activity or control program work; Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice. For this position, specialized experience would also include performing chemical and biological experiments; writing laboratory reports and maintaining complete records of procedures/experiments performed; preparing media, buffers and solutions; and operating varying laboratory equipment and troubleshooting problems. (A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.)

NOTE: Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.

OR Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must be directly related to the position to be filled. (Transcript required)

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

Ability to perform laboratory work and understand laboratory principles.

Ability to communicate with a diverse population of varying backgrounds.

Knowledge of chemical and biological principles, theories, and practices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: This work involves prolonged standing. Will be subjected to irritant chemicals, animals, and radioisotopes requiring safety precautions, using protective clothing and gear.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:

Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;

Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;

Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and

Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.

After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best qualified group.
