Employees in these positions serve as a Biological Science Technician (General) for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 6, National Wildlife Refuge System in full-time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1 year that will total less than 1040 hours (6 months), excluding overtime in a service year. The service year is the calendar year that begins on the date of the employee's initial appointment in the agency. These appointments may be extended from year to year. Extensions of appointment without further competition may be granted based on work needs, funding, or any other condition of employment. Incumbent may be terminated or placed on an intermittent work schedule (no pre-scheduled tour of duty) at any time. There are no promotions for temporary positions.

Employees will perform a variety of tasks in support of daily work operations at a National Wildlife Refuge or Wetland Management District. Typical but not all inclusive duties are:
--Collects, measures, and records biological information such as species, size, weight, sex, age, percent mortalities, etc. Computes, compiles, summarizes and assesses data in tabular, graphic, or narrative form (e.g., production reports, distribution reports, reporting unusual or unexpected results in detail. Assists or performs biological studies/surveys for determining the manner and extent to which wildlife, or plant populations are affected by management activities. Monitors appearance and activity of wildlife for obvious signs of illness, disease, discontent, and general physical condition. May conduct resource management activities such as GIS/GPS mapping, marking, surveying, seeding, habitat monitoring, fencing, invasive weed management, vegetation identification, etc. Operates and performs limited maintenance on a variety of equipment and structures. May be required to operate passenger vehicles, light trucks, tractors and boats. May participate in prescribed burning activities. May be responsible for providing work direction for volunteers, YCC enrollees, temporary employees, etc.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: The work involves standing, bending, walking and a moderate amount of physical exertion. The incumbent may be required to lift containers weighing up to 25 pounds in performance of assigned duties. Most work is performed outdoors where the incumbent may encounter variable weather conditions and exposure to insects. Work performed indoors is in an office or workshop setting. Incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger, self, fellow workers or property.

GENERAL AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
GS-04: Applicants must have at least 6 months of general experience and 6 months of specialized experience.
General Experience: any type of work that demonstrated the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with biological work.
Specialized Experience is that which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is assisting with conducting biological surveys related to wildlife or their habitat; collecting data on plant or wildlife species; controlling invasive species by mechanical or biological techniques; fencing, facility maintenance; taking or recording scientific measurements; and keeping records on habitat conditions in order to report data.
GS-05: One year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-04 grade level is qualifying for GS-05) that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is conducting biological surveys related to wildlife and their habitat, collecting biological data on plant and wildlife species, controlling invasive species by mechanical, biological or chemical techniques; fencing, facility maintenance and other miscellaneous duties, taking and recording scientific measurements; and keeping detailed and precise records on habitat conditions in order to report data.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-04: Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school in an accredited college or university that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics.
GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for both the GS-04 and GS-05 grade levels, which when combined meets 100% of the qualification requirements.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
In addition to the Specialized Experience requirement and any Basic Education requirement, the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics) have been identified as required to satisfactorily perform the work of this position:
