The Dillard University Department of Biology is seeking an energetic, skilled biologist to serve as a full-time Biology Laboratory Coordinator.
Dillard University is a small, private Historically Black College in the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans, serving students with a superior, student-centered education since 1869. The current Dillard student body is approximately 1500 students and growing, and biology is one of the largest majors.
Job responsibilities will include:
Maintenance and organization of Biology Department teaching laboratories, including ordering supplies and equipment as needed.
Supervising and arranging for the regular maintenance and repair of biology laboratory equipment including microscopes.
Support of faculty members in teaching laboratory sections: this entails setting up lab materials and reagents before each lab section and breaking down lab materials and reagents after each lab section.
Supervising the Biology Department Hazardous Materials procedures, developing and enforcing laboratory safety protocols, supervising the disposal of hazardous waste.
Working with biology adjunct lab instructors, ordering books for adjunct lab instructors and assisting in ongoing training and supervising of adjunct lab instructors.
Collaborating with the Biology Department head and other biology faculty in curriculum development for biology laboratories, especially for the two-semester General Biology course.
Teaching no more than one laboratory section per semester, for one of the existing biology courses including the two-semester freshman-level General Biology course. These courses include topics such as the scientific method, basic biochemistry, cell biology, metabolism, anatomy and physiology, ecology, genetics, and evolutionary biology. When teaching, the lab coordinator will also be expected to meet with students as needed and hold office hours weekly.
This is a 12-month staff position. The Biology Department offers courses during the summer sessions, thus all the above responsibilities include summers as well as the academic year.
The Laboratory Coordinator will report to the head of the Biology Department.
A master's degree in biology.
Experience doing laboratory research in a biology laboratory.
Biology teaching experience (including laboratory instruction), at the college level or the high school level.
Excellent organizational skills.
The ability to initiate projects and be a "self-starter."
