The Bookstore Customer Service Associate performs varied clerical and sales work involving the receipt and custody of cash, checks, money orders, credit cards, and charges to sponsored students, with the proper paperwork and information. Must have the ability to deal with the public in a positive, customer-friendly manner and use common courtesy. The position works under the direction of the Bookstore Manager or his/her designee.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to all customers
  • Operate POS system to ring up all sales
  • Receive cash, checks, money orders, student cards, or credit cards
  • Generate receipts for all sales and refunds for returned merchandise according to bookstore policies
  • Responsible for all cash, credit cards, checks, money orders and charge receipts for the register
  • Issue and charge merchandise to authorized departments as per school policies
  • Approve all tender types with proper identification
  • Prepare charges for all sponsored student with the correct paperwork and proper identification
  • Approve paperwork required for charge students
  • Set up and maintain individual files for all sponsored students
  • Prepare charges for departments
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Promote good customer relations by being courteous and responsive
  • Relate to the public in a positive fashion
  • Answer telephones in timely and friendly manner. Receive and forward messages, as necessary
  • Stock, arrange, and display all bookstore merchandise, including textbooks
  • Affix retail tags to merchandise and fixtures as required
  • Assist in counting of stock for inventory
  • Perform light housekeeping, including dusting, while maintaining the store in clean and orderly fashion daily

Working Conditions:

Significant exertion on a daily basis, which includes standing, walking, bending, stooping and other awkward postures and work positions; sustained activities require strength. Frequent to moderate lifting 35-50 pounds.

Required Qualifications:

  • Empathy for the customer’s situation
  • Able to communicate clearly, both written and speech
  • Ability to handle complaints in a positive manner, even when handling unpleasant customers
  • Have a pleasant, friendly interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build long-term friendly relationships with customers
  • Ability to operate a PC-based automated cash register system along with general office machines
  • Ability to correctly handle monetary transactions
  • Ability to answer telephones and provide good customer service in that process
  • Accuracy and understanding of efficient and productive methods is essential

Minimum Requirements of Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from High School or GED equivalent
  • Ability to work under stress in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • One year of retail or related experience preferred

Annual Salary : $21,516 - DOE
