The Project Governance department's mission is to improve the company's delivery of projects on budget, on plan, on purpose. We seek to advance Project Management as a core competency at PG&E. We sustain enterprise-wide project management standards and procedures that promote repeatable high-quality results. Our core team is based on joint membership from Finance and Operations. We drive better decision-making for the company's largest projects, in part through rigorous governance as well as through ongoing tracking and reporting. The Project Governance department formally reports to the VP of Strategic Business Management.
Our approach is to partner with the project management organizations across the utility to advance best practices for achieving approved project objectives. Project management is integrated into the business practices of the operating lines of business (LOBs). LOBs are accountable for projects throughout their lifecycle.
This position reports to the Manager of Project Governance. The Project Governance team is responsible for improving company-wide project management policies, procedures, and standards; performing research and analysis; and creating key deliverables. Deliverables include presentations, analyses, reports, and guidance documents-- that clearly, concisely, and effectively deliver appropriate messages for multi-level audiences, including Senior Officers.
The successful candidate will work with directors, managers, project managers, business planners, and analysts. The position offers a range of interesting work opportunities, professional challenges, and unique exposure to company-wide major projects and key stakeholders.
The major project portfolio includes projects from throughout company. Example projects include: Transmission (substation upgrades, pipeline replacement,), Renewable (solar, fuel cells,), IT (mobile communication tools implementation), Generation (new construction, hydroelectric upgrades).
Successful candidate must be detail oriented, highly analytical, and able to work independently in ambiguous environments. Candidate must also be able to take complex information and convey it to various levels of the organization in a clear and concise manner. Workload is steady and often considerable (evening/weekend work is not uncommon); schedule can be fast paced-and demanding.

Reporting & Analysis - Key focus is Project Executive Reporting for projects (generally $20M ) approved by the Executive Project Committee as well as ad hoc reporting and analysis. For assigned areas, ensure reporting is accurate, timely, and of high-quality. Derive key insights to help identify risks and opportunities and improve business decision-making.
Project Management Improvement - Plan, participate, and help facilitate the monthly cross-functional, director-level Project Management Improvement Team (PMIT) sessions. Work collaboratively with Project Governance and PMIT members to develop, execute, and report progress on company-wide improvement initiatives. Example initiatives: Technology Enhancements to improve/support Project Management, Earned Value Implementation, Project Risk Management, Improved Cost Estimating. Lead and support subcommittees for various initiatives. Facilitate and drive benchmarking with the goal of identifying "best practices" that are appropriate for PG&E.
PM Training & Communication - Develop, maintain, and deliver communication tools such as Workshops, Brown Bags and custom presentations to educate varying audiences about project management best practices and positively affect change and alignment with broader vision and mission. Review current project management training portfolio, assess effectiveness and analyze need for enhancements/modifications to portfolio.
Policies, Procedures & Standards - Support ensuring all applicable policies, procedures, and standards regarding company-wide project management already deployed and in production are maintained and sustained at the right level of quality and consistency. Provide guidance to Lines of Business for their procedures and foster adherence Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Engineering or equivalent field
4 years of professional business experience
5 years of working experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
Demonstrated ability to deliver, written and orally, a clear and concise message through various mediums
Demonstrated superior work ethic and exceptional levels of accountability, self-drive, and business judgment
Demonstrated ability to independently identify and incorporate improvements to processes, procedures, and deliverables.
Strong understanding of the utility business and exposure to PG&E
Project Management Institute - Certified project management professional (PMP)
Demonstrated skills in influencing others and constructively confronting issues
Experience with Primavera Project Management Software
Lean Six Sigma certification
Automation (Excel) of reporting
