Exam Number R6257B Filing Type Open Continuous Filing Start Date 01/31/2013 Salary Type Monthly Salary Minimum 4992.08 Salary Maximum 4992.08 Position/Program Information Performs journey-level carpentry work on new construction, alteration and repair projects.

Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Carpenter Working Supervisor or higher level supervisor and are responsible for performing journey-level carpentry work such as rough and finish carpentry on buildings and does milling, woodturning, and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instruction. Positions are also responsible for constructing scaffolding, building forms, layering floors, and erecting framing. These positions require incumbents to exercise a knowledge of common practices, tools, terminology, and accident prevention precautions of the trade and the ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions. These positions require incumbents to carry heavy equipment, tools, and materials, when performing rough and finish carpentry on buildings Essential Job Functions
Interprets blueprints, building plans, and sketches for information pertaining to the type of material required and dimensions, scope, and layout of the structure to be fabricated, repaired, or installed;

Prepares project layout; measures and marks cutting and assembly lines on various materials and prepares worksite as prescribed;

Verifies trueness of structure and makes appropriate modifications as necessary; cuts, shapes, fastens, and assembles materials according to prescribed measurements and instruction;

Lays out, constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures consisting of various materials;

Fits and installs prefabricated structures, fixtures, and finish hardware;

Maintains tools, machinery, and shop area in proper working order;

Adheres to applicable regulations and standards pertaining to work and shop safety;

Prepares daily work reports and materials takeoff;

Consults with and responds to inquiries from concerned parties;

Supervises Carpenter Apprentices and Helpers performing building, installation, and repair work. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of a recognized carpenter apprentice training program of at least four years' duration* -OR- Five years' experience in carpentry work on buildings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level**. Physical Class Physical Class IV – Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity. License(s) Required A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. Recognized Carpenter Apprentice Training Certificate will be verified through Carpenter Union #409 or Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
**Journey-level carpentry work is work that requires extensive knowledge of the craft such as rough and finish carpentry on buildings, milling, woodturning, and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instruction. Please ensure application contains detailed information specifically addressing journey level experience, educational background, and/or specialized training courses/programs completed. Also, the required technical experience can be a combination of County and/or outside experience. Examination Content
This examination will consist of a written test that contains both paper and pencil and computerized parts weighted 100% covering knowledge of general carpentry/plan interpretation, mechanical aptitude, carpentry mathematics, reading comprehension, safety orientation, achievement, collaboration, confidence, reliability, compliance, and safety judgment.

NOTE: Applicants that have taken any identical written test part(s) for other exams (e.g., General Maintenance Worker,(R6619F); Senior General Maintenace Worker, (R6622D)) within the last (12) months, will have their written test scores for the identical test part(s) automatically transferred to this examination.

This examination contains test parts that may be used in the future for new examinations. Your scores will be transferred to the new examination and may not be allowed to re-take any identitical test parts for at least a year.

Invitation letters for the written test may be sent to candidates via electronic mail.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

Applicants must meet the Minimum Requirements and achieve a passing score of 70% or higher in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Vacancy Information The resulting eligible register from this examination will be used to fill both permanent and temporary vacancies at various County of Los Angeles departments as they occur. Eligibility Information

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register for a period of twelve (12) months from the date the register is created.
