Positions allocable to this class typically report to a Carpenter Working Supervisor or higher level supervisor and are responsible for performing journey-level carpentry work such as rough and finish carpentry on buildings and does milling, woodturning, and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instruction. Positions are also responsible for constructing scaffolding, building forms, layering floors, and erecting framing. These positions require incumbents to exercise a knowledge of common practices, tools, terminology, and accident prevention precautions of the trade and the ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions. Interprets blueprints, building plans, and sketches for information pertaining to the type of material required and dimensions, scope, and layout of the structure to be fabricated, repaired, or installed;
Prepares project layout; measures and marks cutting and assembly lines on various materials and prepares worksite as prescribed;
Verifies trueness of structure and makes appropriate modifications as necessary; cuts, shapes, fastens, and assembles materials according to prescribed measurements and instruction;
Lays out, constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures consisting of various materials;
Fits and installs prefabricated structures, fixtures, and finish hardware;
Maintains tools, machinery, and shop area in proper working order;
Adheres to applicable regulations and standards pertaining to work and shop safety;
Prepares daily work reports and materials takeoff;
Consults with and responds to inquiries from concerned parties;
Supervises Carpenter Apprentices and Helpers performing building, installation, and repair work. Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a recognized carpenter apprentice training program of at least four years' duration* -OR- Five years' experience in carpentry work on buildings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level**. Physical Class Physical Class IV – Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity. License(s) Required A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. **Journey-level carpentry work is work that requires extensive knowledge of the craft such as rough and finish carpentry on buildings, milling, woodturning, and pattern work from blueprints, drawings, sketches, specifications or verbal instruction. Please ensure application contains detailed information specifically addressing journey level experience, educational background, and/or specialized training courses/programs completed. The original certificate MUST be presented during the selection process and/or prior to appointment. Recognized Carpenter Apprentice Training Certificate will be verified through Carpenter Union #409 or Los Angeles Trade Technical College.
This examination will consist of a written test that contains both paper and pencil and computerized parts weighted 100% covering knowledge of general carpentry/plan interpretation, mechanical aptitude, carpentry mathematics, reading comprehension, safety orientation, achievement, collaboration, confidence, reliability, compliance, and safety judgment.
NOTE: Applicants that have taken any identical written test part(s) for other exams (e.g., General Maintenance Worker,(R6619F); Senior General Maintenace Worker, (R6622D)) within the last (12) months, will have their written test scores for the identical test part(s) automatically transferred to this examination.
This examination contains test parts that may be used in the future for new examinations. Your scores will be transferred to the new examination and may not be allowed to re-take any identitical test parts for at least a year.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.
