The Chief Executive Officer of ASQ reports to the Board of Directors through the Chairman of the Board and is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the activities and businesses of ASQ.
The next CEO will lead and administer the support function of ASQ to support the needs of the members and collaborate with the Board in developing new products, services and programs to increase member value and engagement. He/she will work closely with the Board on the continuing development and implementation of the Society’s strategic vision. The new CEO will be charged with building upon the rich history and strong foundation to make the Society an even more vibrant organization, designed to effectively serve its members and to take innovative and strategic leadership roles on business and other issues facing the quality movement. He/she will work with the Board to set the direction of priorities for the Society, and then lead the members and staff to achieve the specific goals and objectives needed to accomplish that strategy. The CEO will continue the transformation of ASQ to a truly global organization. ASQ is committed to hiring a strong leader who can lead the organization at this important time in its history.
The CEO will be called upon frequently to act as an ambassador and ombudsman for both the Society and for the quality movement generally, both domestically and internationally. He/she will be an external spokesperson and representative to key constituents, members, allied organizations, the public and the business community. The successful candidate will be expected to continue to enhance ASQ’s global footprint and impact, working with all relevant constituencies, international organizations, and other national organizations to enlist support for the issues critical to ASQ’s members on a global basis. As the ASQ is an organization with a broad and diverse membership, the CEO will play a critical role maintaining and building relationships with their members and range of interests, and continuing the unity that has been so important to the organization. He/she will be ultimately responsible for the overall fiscal management of the organization, and he/she must effectively oversee ASQ’s resources, both personnel and fiscal, in an efficient and competent manner. The CEO will help to keep ASQ fiscally strong to ensure that it can always meet its members’ short- and long-term needs. With that in mind, it is critical that he/she be an inspirational leader who will motivate, develop, leverage, hire and retain an outstanding executive staff.
For this extremely important position, our client is seeking a visionary and strategic leader. The successful candidate will be a person with executive presence, a demonstrable track record of leading an organization creatively, and will have demonstrated strategic planning abilities and be skilled at executing to deliver results. The new CEO will excel at working with a volunteer-based Board, will possess creative and innovative ideas, and be able to lead the Board and its members through voluntary leadership cycles for the long-term. He/she must have an open and entrepreneurial mindset for continuing, expanding and leading the various businesses of ASQ.
The individual will be respected for his/her deep knowledge and/or passion for the issue of quality. If not already steeped in the relevant issues, the new CEO must be a quick study and be demonstrably committed to the vision and mission of ASQ and its members.
The CEO will be an individual who embraces technology and be knowledgeable of the subject matter to help ASQ utilize its technology platform for market differentiation and increase value to the members and the quality community.
The ideal candidate will be a poised and energetic leader, who is also down-to-earth and approachable, both in a group setting and one-on-one. This individual will have strong interpersonal acumen and communications skills, and will be a service-oriented listener who engages all members and Chief Executive Officer American Society for Quality constituencies in a meaningful and respectful manner. The new CEO will be a diplomat who is skilled at building bridges and developing relationships in a variety of settings, and with diverse constituents and organizations. Experience operating within an association or nonprofit environment would be beneficial but is not required, as would strong for-profit business experience. A strong emphasis will be placed on the proven ability to deal with a broad range of individuals, backgrounds, and perspectives particularly globally.
The successful candidate will be a person of the highest integrity and with exceptional energy. He/she must possess self-confidence but also be humble. The ideal candidate needs to be gracious in manner, comfortable in any situation, and be able to see the lighter side of difficult situations, and have a healthy sense of humor.

The new CEO of ASQ will be a strategic individual who can provide leadership for the membership and the quality movement. He/she must have creative and innovative ideas, have outstanding judgment, be a critical thinker, and be able to engage the Board and other members on a wide variety of business, economic and technical issues facing the profession. The next leader must be able to assimilate and balance the many different interests of various members and help drive consensus. He/she must be able to rally the volunteer leaders of the membership and staff around common goals and drive to positive results. The next CEO will have focus and tenacity to lead the organization in the pursuit of these goals and objectives even in the face of obstacles.
BUILDING AN ORGANIZATION OF EXCELLENCE
The new CEO of ASQ will be committed to building an organization of excellence. He/she must be dedicated to continuing the journey of excellence that ASQ began long ago and is evidenced today in its use of the Wisconsin Forward Award (Baldrige) process. The new leader must be ready to be a champion of enterprise-wide excellence through improvement. It is as easy as saying that as the world’s most respected quality organization, ASQ must lead by example and be dedicated to all the performance efficiency and effectiveness benefits that ASQ advocates for all organizations. ASQ’s Board expects ASQ to be a world-class organization and looks to the CEO to be a visible champion of ASQ’s organization-wide journey to excellence.
The new CEO of ASQ must be a passionate and effective advocate for its members and mission, and will have a style that is collegial, approachable and direct. He/she will be a keen listener who picks up on the detail and nuance, and can intuitively develop insights regarding people and situations. It is critical that the ASQ’s CEO be the kind of person who builds meaningful and sincere relationships with its diverse membership, the key volunteers and senior staff. This individual must work easily and be embracing of diversity and different perspectives. An individual who is adaptable, flexible and creative in their view will be important. The new CEO must have a service-oriented perspective, always looking out for the members and the best interest of the Society as a whole. He/she will be highly articulate in a clear and compelling manner, both in writing and orally, and with a wide variety of audiences and cross culturally.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS AND USING INFLUENCE
The new CEO will have a strong positive personal presence and be a diplomat, collaborator, motivator and relationship builder. This individual should have a track record of creating and cultivating networks and the ability to build, sustain and develop meaningful relationships. The ability to build bridges and alliances internally and externally, domestically and internationally will be key. He/she must also be the type of person who represents the membership well in all venues.
MANAGING TEAMS AND BUDGETS
The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership experience and ability to effectively manage a team, a complex multi-site organization, and fiscal and personnel issues. He/she must work well in a team environment and be able to inspire and motivate staff and membership. Business experience or at least a strong sense of business acumen will be helpful for leading the member services aspects of the organization. The new CEO will understand how to leverage his/her staff, as well as the resources of the membership and the Society. He/she will value talent and inspire and motivate their team to work together in a clear direction and purpose. This individual should have strong experience setting strategic direction, defining clear goals and ensuring accountability. The new CEO will have a verifiable record of hiring, motivating and developing outstanding talent and will be a "roll up the sleeves" doer and not "a presider". He/she will demonstrate resolve balanced with reasonableness and diplomacy when leading the team to execute for results.
