Manhattan College is seeking a colleague and a leader to serve as chair of the Department of Mathematics beginning July 1, 2013. A Ph.D. in mathematics is required.

The Department seeks an established scholar to provide leadership for new educational and scholarly directions, to help it to solidify its current efforts in pedagogy and scholarship, and to implement its vision for the future. These include the expansion of undergraduate research opportunities, the evaluation and improvement of the recently approved master’s program in mathematics for high school teachers, and the development of a new master's program in applied mathematics.

The department offers both B.S. and B.A. degrees in Mathematics, and an M.S. degree in Mathematics (Teacher’s Option). The current mathematics faculty have backgrounds and expertise in algebra, functional analysis, graph theory, machine learning, mathematical logic, algebraic topology, mathematics education, operations research, representation theory, and statistical modeling.

A candidate must present evidence of excellence in teaching, an active research program, and leadership ability to merit appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. The department is also interested in evidence of significant involvement in educational improvement. Experience mentoring undergraduate research and ideas about how to encourage it are very desirable. All areas of expertise in mathematics will be considered.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statements of administrative and teaching philosophies, and a research plan. Three letters of reference should also be sent; one of these should address teaching ability. Review of applications will begin in early November and continue until the position is filled. All applications and letters of recommendation should be addressed to the Mathematics Search Committee and must be sent electronically to math.search@manhattan.edu . No hardcopy applications will be considered.
