This is a Cook Internship, therefore, the ideal candidate should be pursuing a culinary/food service type degree.

DUTIES:
PATHWAYS PROGRAM:
The purpose of the Pathways Internship Program is to provide students with exposure to public service, enhance their educational experience, and provide financial support to encourage and support their educational goals. An opportunity may arise in which you could noncompetitively convert into the competitive service within 120 days after you have completed all Internship Program requirements for conversion. Conversion is not guaranteed. A position must be available and program eligibility requirements must be met.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent performs as a cook in the unit in support of the food service operation and the department’s mission. Incumbent cooks meats and vegetables; bakes a variety of baked goods; cuts or trims meats; cooks a variety of regular or special diet foods and meals; adjusts recipes for yield and taste; plans processes to ensure food is done on time and at the proper temperature. The incumbent ensures cleanliness, neatness and sanitation standards are adhered to. The incumbent is able to do quantity cooking utilizing written instructions and is knowledgeable with cooking ingredients in the use of proper cooking methods. The incumbent drives commercial vehicles for food deliveries to US Vets. Above all, the incumbent observes proper safety requirements in a kitchen environment.

Incumbent must possess a valid and current state driver's license at all times. Drives according to all federal, state and local rules.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Tour of duty is rotating 8-hour shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To be eligible for this internship the following requirements must be met:

1. U.S. Citizen

2. At least 16 years of age by the closing date of this announcement.

3. Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in degree or certificate program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis;

4. If enrolled, you must be in good academic standing (At least a 2.75 GPA); TRANSCRIPTS OR PROOF OF ENROLLMENT/ACCEPTANCE MUST BE SUBMITTED.

5. You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship. If you cannot, you are ineligible for this program.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement (memorandum of understanding).

Incumbent must possess a valid and current state driver's license at all times. Drives according to all federal, state and local rules.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Work assignments require moderate to heavy physical activity including constantly standing and walking; frequently moving and lifting objects weighing up to 60 pounds unassisted and more with assistance, frequent stooping, reaching and pushing or pulling carts loaded with food items on top or inside. Must have the ability to see all colors in the visible light spectrum.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Working conditions are often crowded, stressful, and uncomfortably warm and noisy. Extremes in temperature (cold from kitchen freezers/refrigerators and heat and steam from ovens, dish and pot machine, wet slippery floors and sharp instruments.

EXPERIENCE:
Although a specific length of training and experience is not required, you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.

This position is open at the WG-5 level, therefore, quantity cooking experience is needed.

Please be sure to list all cook experience you may have (paid and/or non-paid). Creditable experience is experience gained in a hospital or similar institution which has allowed you to gain ability to perform quantity cooking duties. Please be sure your application reflects all your cook experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT:
Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a cemetery caretaker without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS:
Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

1. Ability to do the work of cook (Screen out).

2. Ability to keep work area neat, clean and in order.

3. Ability to do quantity hospital cooking for various diets using written instructions.

4. Ability to use kitchen utensils and equipment.

5. Knowledge of cooking ingredients.

6. Ability to observe safety practices and work quickly without loss of quality of work (dexterity and safety).

NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month & year starting and ending dates AND hours worked per week. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
