The position provides in-home and on-going family based safety services to protect children from abuse and neglect and prevent removal of children from their family. The position provides both case management and direct services to families to help the family reduce the risk of abuse and neglect. The position requires routine interaction with various local community systems and resources for ongoing services for families and children.

- Assesses current or future risk to children by interviewing parents, family members, and others; interviewing and examining children; assessing home environment; and gathering pertinent information from other sources. • Provides time limited in-home services to meet the specific needs of clients by identifying problem areas, developing treatment plans, and using appropriate and necessary resources to minimize risk and provide for safety of the child; and maintains contact with parents and children through home visits in order to achieve treatment goals. • Develops and maintains effective working relationships between Child Protective Services staff and law enforcement officials, judicial officials, legal resources, medical professionals, and other community resources. • Determines action to be taken to remove or to reduce an immediate threat to the safety of a child to include testifying in court to seek emergency protective services, placing children in substitute care, referring family for immediate crisis intervention therapy or other community resources. • Documents case records by completing forms, narratives, and reports to form a written record for each client. • Performs other duties as assigned and required to maintain unit operations. • Promotes and demonstrates appropriate respect for cultural diversity among coworkers and all work-related contacts. • Attends work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
- Knowledge of Texas laws relating to regulations of child care and child abuse/neglect. • Knowledge of normal child development and early childhood learning. • Knowledge of children's needs and value of family life. • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships. • Skill in effective verbal and written communication. • Ability to empathize with and empower clients to protect and preserve their family. • Ability to deal effectively with difficult child abuse/neglect complaints. • Ability to conduct home visits that may be in isolated or high crime areas and may involves exposure to substandard and unsanitary living conditions. • Ability to work irregular hours. • Ability to tolerate stress in an emotion-filled environment.
Applicants for positions which require, as part of the essential functions of the job, driving a motor vehicle, must have a reliable motor vehicle, and acceptable driving record for the past five years, and a current, valid Texas drivers license appropriate for the vehicle and passenger or cargo load. Initial Selection Criteria:
- Child Protective Services Specialist II: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. • Child Protective Services Specialist III: Employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist for 18 months AND have received Child Protective Services Specialist Certification OR currently employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist III in Texas Department of Family and Protective Services OR previously employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist III in Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. • Child Protective Services Specialist IV: Three and one half years cumulative Child Protective Services Specialist experience AND currently employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist III AND have received Child Protective Services Advanced Specialist Certification OR currently employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist IV in Texas Department of Family and Protective Services OR previously employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist IV in Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
This position may be filled at any level from a CPS Specialist II to CPS Specialist IV. The starting salary range is $2,644.08 to $2,970.91 per month and will be based on the qualifications of the selected applicant. Factors such as education and experience may be considered when establishing the starting salary. The starting salary for former agency employees and employees transferring directly from other Texas state agencies may exceed the range above; however, the starting salary for this position may not exceed $4,604.83 if filled at the highest classification.

Applicants must pass the on-line assessment to be eligible to progress through the process and may receive an interview. If the applicant fails/does not pass, the applicant will not be selected for an interview. The applicant must wait 6 months to re-take the assessment test. Newly hired DFPS employees in eligible positions will be assigned a DFPS cellular phone.
