Position/Program Information
Positions allocable to this class analyzes crime and criminal information, prepares reports and analytical products, makes recommendations, and disseminate crime and intelligence information and data relevant to actual and anticipated criminal activity to law enforcement personnel to increase the effectiveness of patrol deployment, case investigation, knowledge-based policing, crime prevention, and the apprehension of suspects.

Essential Job Functions
Reviews and analyzes crime reports, field interview information, and related criminal data and information daily to identify and evaluate crime series, trends, and patterns.

Utilizes manual and automated systems for storage and retrieval of crime, arrest, and calls for service information, including querying, sorting, and presenting data.

Prepares crime analysis reports and studies, including known offender bulletins, crime series bulletins, and crime pattern bulletins with appropriate visual presentations, such as maps and link analysis charts.

Provides tactical and strategic analysis and investigative support in major case investigations and multi-agency task forces involving criminal activity.

Utilizes intelligence analysis applications to develop comprehensive intelligence products based on a collection of information from multiple sources in order to identify organized crime activity and criminal enterprises.

Conducts crime and intelligence analysis of a highly confidential or sensitive nature.

Conducts complex analysis in the forms of telephone toll analysis, link charts, timelines, flow charts, financial/asset trace reports, investigative, strategic, and intelligence reports, mapping, and public records.

Develops and maintains effective liaisons with local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies to exchange crime information by attending local and regional crime analyst meetings.

Supervise staff assigned to the Crime Analysis Unit, as required.

Requirements
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor's degree* from an accredited** college or university in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field***. Paid experience as a crime analyst earned in a recognized law enforcement agency may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis to a maximum substitution of four years experience for the Bachelor's degree. A Certificate of Completion of a program of study in Crime and Intelligence Analysis, approved by the California Department of Justice, may be substituted for one year of the required education.

Physical Class
Physical Class II – Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

License(s) Required
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Accreditation Information
**Accredited institutions are those listed in the publications of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to be equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.

Examination Content
This examination will consist of a written test covering analysis and interpretation of tables, knowledge of crime analysis, logical reasoning, and statistics and computations weighted 100%.

THE WRITTEN TEST IS NOT SUBJECT TO REVIEW BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list.

A HAND HELD BATTERY/SOLAR OPERATED NON-TAPE PRODUCING CALCULATOR WILL BE PROVIDED AT THE WRITTEN TEST. USE OF MEMORY-STORAGE, SCIENTIFIC, STATISTICAL, OR FINANCIAL CALCULATORS, CELL, PHONES, PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSITANTS (PDAs), AND ELECRONIC DEVICES IS PROHIBITED.

Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.

Vacancy Information
The resulting eligible list for this examination will be used to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Technical Services Division.

Eligibility Information
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.
