Job Description:
University of Florida/ IFAS Extension seeks a self-starting, energetic, team-oriented individual in the role of Hillsborough County Extension Director ( CED ) to manage one of the largest cooperative extension offices in the state. The CED is responsible for management, supervision, coordination and leadership of the total extension program and a staff of 40 people. Responsibilities include maintaining effective working relationships with faculty and staff, extension administration, county government, community leaders, private sector clientele, media, related agencies, and the general public. The CED supervises and evaluates county faculty who conduct programs in agriculture, residential and commercial horticulture, 4-H youth development, and family and consumer sciences. The CED also oversees clerical and county staff.

In addition to management duties, the CED will also be responsible for an extension education program in his/her area of expertise (e.g., agriculture, natural resources, family and consumer science, 4-H youth development, community sustainability, leadership development, etc.). These forward-looking educational programs will be developed with the help of a highly-functioning overall county advisory committee to meet real community needs in a rapidly growing urban/rural setting. The CED will acquire grants (monetary/in-kind), provide service to schools, develop creative works (e.g., presentations), participate in professional societies, and attain promotion and permanent status per state faculty guidelines. The CED will assume other responsibilities as assigned by the District Extension Director and/or County Management and will be expected to work with the South Central district CED team, county departments, agencies, organizations, etc. in interdisciplinary projects.

Hillsborough County is about 1,072 square miles with a population of more than 1.1 million at a density of 950 people per square mile. Greater than 20% of the population speaks a language other than English. Hillsborough county home ownership is 64% and 25% of the populace holds a B.S. degree or better. The main agricultural commodities are ornamentals, strawberries and vegetables. Tourism also is major contributor to the local economy.

Minimum Requirements:
The position requires a Master’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of extension experience or equivalent. The successful applicant must exhibit competencies in office management, customer service, finance, performance appraisals, advisory committees, coaching/mentoring, and team building, have excellent interpersonal communication skills, be competent in computer use, and have the ability to motivate, train, and recruit people. Previous managerial experience is expected. As a joint county/state appointment, the individual will follow all policies relating to Hillsborough county and UF/ IFAS Extension programs and personnel with particular emphasis on the program development process. The candidate must be willing to work irregular hours and some weekends and travel with personal transportation in/out of the county with occasional overnight travel. The county requires successful completion of a drug screen and background check.
