Assist in the operation of challenge course activities for the Salvation Army camps. Ensure challenge course activities are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Assist and participate with camp programs and activities as directed by your immediate supervisor and Camp Directors.

Assist in Challenge Course operation;
Assist with execution of challenge course activities as planned by Challenge Course Specialist;
Assist in ensuring that the highest level of safety and precautionary measures are in place and utilized;
Assist in teaching and monitoring proper use of equipment;
Assist with checking for properly fitted headgear for all participants;
Assist with checking of equipment for safety and needed repairs. Report needed repairs to Challenge Course Specialist;
Assist with cleaning and securing all equipment at the end of each session;
Assist with keeping the Challenge Course area clean;
Assist in maintaining program supplies;
Assist with keeping records on participants;
Assist with end of season inventory & packing of materials and supplies;
Performs all duties in accordance with prescribed regulatory compliance guidelines as well as American Camp Association accreditation standards.
Participate enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights and other all-camp activities and camp functions;
Sit with camper tables during meals and serve as a table monitor when needed;
Keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection;
Be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
Ropes and Challenge Course Equipment
Knowledge of fundamentals, rules and regulations, ropes and challenge courses;
Knowledge of the principles and practices of good sportsmanship;
Ability to perform live saving techniques, C.P.R. and first aid procedures in emergency situations;
Ability to plan, develop, facilitate, lead and supervise challenge course activities;
Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children;
Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff;
Ability to ensure the safety of recreation participants.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff;
Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques;
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity;
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers;
Ability to meet attendance requirements;
Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
Some physical requirements of the Challenge Course Assistant position could be endurance including climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate challenge course equipment and activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
One year experience leading sports, recreation or challenge course activities preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Certification or documented training from a recognized organization or certifying body for the types of activities offered.
CPR and First Aid Certification
$225 per week
Camp Staff Orientation is from June 12th - June 16th. Camp Sessions run from June 17th - August 3rd. There will be a required Ropes Certification Course the week prior to orientation. Upon hire, you will be contacted with the official dates and times. If for whatever reason you are unable to be here for the entire season, please let us know on your application. Orientation is NOT optional.
