POLICE OFFICER LATERAL/PRE-SEVICE
Under the direction of the Chief of Police a lateral police officer must successfully complete a P.O.S.T certified on-the-job Field Training Program and complete a 12-month probationary period. An applicant seeking to apply for a lateral position of Police Officer with the El Camino Police Department shall meet the following requirements:
Have successfully completed a P.O.S.T certified basic police academy or equivalent within the last 3 years, AND/OR
Have already received a valid P.O.S.T Basic Certificate or be eligible to receive such certificate within the first 12-months of employment.
STARTING MONTHLY SALARY
: $4,579. Employees contribute 7% of their earnings toward the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

Applicants must be 21 years of age at time of appointment
High school graduate or equivalent
Possess a valid California Class "C" Drivers license
A U.S. Citizen or a permanent Resident Alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship prior to testing
Successfully pass a physical agility test; an in-depth background investigation; psychological and polygraph examinations
Felony Disqualification - Persons convicted of a felony are disqualified from employment as Peace officers under Section 1029 of the Government Code.
Applicants must satisfactorily complete an in-depth medical examination. Applicants must be in good physical condition, free from disease or defects that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the duties of this position.
At least 20/100 in each eye without correction, correctable to 20/30 in each eye.
Anything other than minor hue impairment is disqualifying.
No greater than 25dB loss in the better ear as average over the test frequencies of 500,100, 2000 and 3000 Hz. In the case of questionable, unusual or borderline hearing loss, the applicant's qualifications will be determined by a Medical doctor.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of sixty (60) college units or possession of an Associate Degree is highly desirable.
Effective interpersonal skills enabling them to deal effectively with a diverse population of students, staff and the general public.
ORAL INTERVIEW - 100%
: The most qualified applicants will be invited for an oral interview. A panel will evaluate a candidate's verbal skills, experience, personal traits, background and other valuable indicators required for this position.
Successful candidates will be required to pass a physical agility examination and an extensive background investigation prior to being eligible for a conditional offer of employment. If a conditional offer is received, a candidate will be required to complete a polygraph examination; a psychological examination and a medical examination before being eligible for hire. Successful candidates must complete a twelve (12) month probationary period.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is designated as regular, full-time, twelve-month classified and is contingent upon available funding. The work location is at the
El Camino College Torrance campus. Candidate selected for employment must be willing to work nights, holidays and other unusual hours and be willing to commit to a minimum of five (5) years of employment with the department. Offer and acceptance of employment is subject to verification of all information provided on the employment application, fingerprint results and tuberculosis and physical examinations as required. Candidate selected for employment will be required to provide verification of work authorization in the form of a passport, valid driver's license or other equivalent identification, and social security card. Physical standards are available for review in the Human Resources office.
