The Career Advisor is responsible for providing quality career advising services to current students, alumni, faculty, and staff through individual appointments and group presentations including workshops and career coursework. Career advisors are responsible for keeping current in career and employment trends and building relationships with academic departments and employers. Career advisors will help coordinate and host career development and employment events such as career fairs and networking events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Serves as career advisor and resource person for students, faculty, and staff.
Provides individual career advising to students to assist them in choosing a major and career decision making.
Utilizes basic career inventories (interests, values, etc.)
Researches and keeps current in employment trends and career development practices through participation in regional and national career organizations ( NACE and/or KYACE ).
Creates and facilitates career and employment workshops (resume writing, interviewing, salary negotiation, etc.).
Present career information to classes and student organizations.
Works with faculty and staff to promote cooperative relationships that will result in opportunities to speak to academic classes.
Builds and maintains working relationships with employers to develop job and internship opportunities for graduates.
Teach career related courses including Career Planning and The World of Work as needed.
Maintain accurate records and data on student appointments, employer contacts, and presentations to use in departmental reports.
Utilize on-line career management system ( NACE -Link) to help students in job search and collect placement data.
Works as a team-member to organize and publicize career fairs and other career related events.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains cooperative relationships with Alumni Affairs and the Development Office for the benefit of Morehead State University.
Serves on university committees and boards as appointed.
Participates in professional career development organizations such as NACE , KYACE , etc. for the purpose of consortiums and cooperation with national and state employment trends.
The Career Advisor reports directly to the Director of Career Services and interacts regularly and closely with university faculty, staff, parents, administrators, and employers.
Master degree in counseling or related field (guidance, vocational, or educational counseling) with a minimum of two years experience or Master degree in related educational field witheight years experience. Should have expertise in teaching. Should have excellent written and oral communications skills.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
Experience in on-line career management systems and tools is desired. Teaching experience at the college level. Computer skills utilizing data spreadsheets, web design, and publications a plus. Should be qualified to be certified as a counselor.
Regular office hours with seasonal bouts of hectic deadlines and recruiting activity. Travel to extended MSU campuses, community events, and employer sites. Works with a high volume of students and employers. Evening and week-end hours required seasonally as needed.
